Glasgow Netball Tournament

SGG entered 3 teams into the Glasgow Netball Tournament on Friday 13th March. This years tournament had 19 teams taking part across the S1-4 year groups which meant that each year group was split into two groups. One of the benefits of this was that the teams that weren't playing could go and support the SGG team that was playing.

The S1s had a difficult group with Holyrood, St Andrews and the winners of the tournament in October, St Thomas Aquinas all involved. The girls who have had only a few games since October competed well against the three schools. Their first game saw them take on Holyrood with them just missing out by one point 3-2. In their second game the played the champs St Thomas Aquinas who have been playing Scottish as well as Glasgow Schools competitions since October. The girls knew this would be a difficult game and came away with a 4-1 scoreline to St Thomas Aquinas. In the final game the girls lost 3-0 to St Andrews but played well and put in an impressive defensive display despite what the scoreline suggests. The final actually consisted of St Thomas Aquinas vs Holyrood both coming from this group showing how difficult qualification into the semis from out group was. Credit must be given to the girls who worked hard in each of their 3 games and are improving all the time. Girl of the Tournament was Eilidh McDougall at Centre.

The S2s had 4 games to play in their group stage. The first game saw the girls narrowly lose to Shawlands, 3-4. This game was close but the girls were always struggling to come back from 4-0 down early on as the games are only 10 mins long. In their 2nd game the girls started and played better and did well to draw 4-4 against Rosshall with Morag scoring an important point at the end of the game. In the third game the girls lost to an experienced St Andrews side 10-3 and immediately after this the girls played their final game narrowly defeating St Thomas Aquinas 2-0. Girl of the Tournament: Katrin Swan at Centre/Goal Defence.

The S3/4 played some great netball througout the day. Regardless whether they won or lost the netball they displayed both going forward and in defence was fantastic. They played All Saints first and seemed to settle quickly into the game winning 6-3. Their next game against Shawlands was a lot closer but they managed to pull off a 3-2 victory. Mr MacKay did some stats analysis for this game, Shawlands had 4 shots scoring 2 which is impressive. We had 17 shots and scored 3...this has given Mr MacCorquodale something to think about for training on a Tuesday and Thursday. Their final game SGG played the eventual champions Holyrood 1. The lost 12-2 but this wasn't due to a lack of effort, Holyrood at every age group are impressive at Netball and their S3/4 team are very good, the girls (and Mr MacCorquodale) learn a lot from playing against better teams. Due to the girls finishing 2nd in their group they qualified for the semi finals! This is even more impressive considering that a year ago they finished 11th out of 11 teams in the tournament. In the semi finals they played Holyrood 2 and lost 3-0 but played well throughout and did excellent in defence to keep the goal shooter and goal attack to a limited number of shots. The girls finished the tournament in 3rd place. Girls of the Tournament: Frances Driscoll Goal Defence and Mia Paton Goal Keeper.

Yet again the Glasgow Tournament was a great day out and the SGG girls showed that they are getting better all the time. We are starting to get more of our girls involved in clubs outside of school as well as having a consistently good numbers along to training on a Tuesday and Thursday evening. Keep up the good work!

SGG are going to the World Schools’ Netball Cup!

We have been invited to take part in the World Schools Netball Cup in Loughborough in June 2025! What a fantastic opportunity for the girls ...
