Giant Heptathlon

Congratulations to the seven girls and boys from S1&2 who competed at the Glasgow Schools Giant Heptathlon event at the Emirates Arena. The event attracted 16 schools from Glasgow with each pupil competing individually in 7 events and with each individual results counting towards the team score. The events were: Long Jump, 60m, Standing Triple Jump, 60m Hurdles, Overhead Shot, Javelin and 600m.

The event was very well run and the Gaelic School throughout the day had very impressive results, including: Eilidh McDougall 2nd fastest overall in the 60m sprint and 5th fastest in the 600m. Erin Moran was 4th fastest in the 60m Sprint and 2nd fastest in the 600m. What makes these performances even more impressive is that these times were out of 111 athletes and both girls are still in S1.

The highlight of the day were the relay races. The girls went first and comfortably won their heat to make it through to the final. The boys narowley missed out but came up against some teams who had slick baton change overs. The girls were nervous going into the final and it was David vs many Goliaths with the Gaelic School up against Holyrood and St Andrews to name a couple of schools involved in the final race. We stuck with the same order for the final. The girls started with Erin Houston who gave us a good solid start coming in about 4th at a changeover, Louisa kept us right in the fight handing to Abigail on leg 3 who had to fight to cut into lane one, she passed to Eilidh Campbell who kept us firmly in fourth position. Louise Templeton got the baton in 4th and handed over about 5th after a nervous changeover to Erin Moran. Erin got the baton and just went, she flew down the back straight of the track to hand over neck and neck for the lead with Holyrood. Eilidh McDougall got the baton on the final leg and powered round the final bend to win the Giant Heptathlon relay and take home the trophy. Well done girls!

The school finished in a credible 7th position overall, this was a great achievement considering it was our first experience of indoor athletics. Next year we know what to expect and look to go a couple of places better.
