Rest, Nutrition and Hydration

Rest, nutrition and hydration are the three most important things for recovery. The more you train the more food you need to eat, the more water you need to drink and the more sleep you need to take. If you train regularly and you don't top up your food, water and sleep every day then this is very bad for the body and you will soon start to see some adverse effects of this. Your body relies on these from you so it can perform at its best for you.

Core PE will be moving on to do Cross-Country Running in the New Year

Hello everybody,

Just a reminder for you that all Core PE classes will be moving to Cross Country Running. But why I hear you ask? Well there’s a number of reasons, including:

It makes us mentally tougher and more resilient. Having to run each step, through mud, tackle hills and cope with challenging weather conditions. This will equip you to you tackle tasks you find challenging in and out of school and throughout your life.

It increases physical fitness. Not only does cross-country build cardio respiratory endurance - running also develops core stability, speed endurance, flexibility, and muscular endurance too

If makes us become better decision makers. Yes, it really does. Deciding which route to take, how to tackle course obstacles, when to go faster, how fast to run reps or laps, when to save energy, when to make a final push for the finish...these and more become a mental workout in addition to the physical exertion. These will help you out in other subjects and in future employment.

It allows each pupil to set challenging but achievable targets and during the block everyone is active all the time for the full duration of the session which is important for us most other sports cannot guarantee this.

You learn how to progressively overload your training - useful to know so when you leave school and want to develop your fitness in your own sport or physical activity.

Increases your self confidence - you will see results quickly and this will build your confidence and you will become more of an I can person and have more belief about your self.

It builds emotional control - we all have busy lives and are troubled with unhelpful thoughts, being active is a coping strategy for a lot of difficult emotions such as anxiety, anger, guilt etc. Using positive self talk, visualisation, process thinking and deep breathing will help you through a cross-country training session and in other challenging aspects of life.

Running is a cheap and very easy form of exercise and at the Gaelic School we want you to experience a lifelong sport sport which will benefit you no matter your age, size or experience level.

Scottish Schools' Cross-Country Championships 2020

A massive congratulations to our cross-country runners who took part in the Scottish Schools' Championships at Hopetoun Estate in Edinburgh. This year's event was on a weekday which allows many more schools to take part in the competition. This meant that the fields were much bigger than what they have been at the same event for a few years. The highlights of the day were an outstanding performance from our teams in the B age groups. The girls team of Ameilia Shuttleworth, Kerry Stewart, Lucie Mills, Peggy-Nan Rodger, and Shona Carey finished in 5th place. The B boys also performed excellently with a 6th place overall. The boys team was: Fionn Graham, Cameron Weir, Joel MacInnes, Daniel Fraser, David Robertson. Well done to our D group runners too for participating on the biggest stage on the cross-country calendar. You guys will get better each year if you keep putting in the work.

Coronavirus

So if you're in one of my core PE classes, sqa class or you attend one of my after school clubs then I have set up a Microsoft Teams for everyone to use whilst off school. These will be used to post work out ideas for you to do whilst at home. I know that at this time that things are a bit uncertain but keep safe, stay at home. If you're going to workout outside then make sure you are doing it safely, with permission and you keep to the 2 metre distance rules.

If you need to contact me for any advice then my email is on glow, or on the Microsoft teams page.

Glasgow Netball League Fixtures

Good luck for this week’s fixtures girls. The S2s play their last league match but they have already secured a place in the final 4 playoffs regardless of the result and the S3/4s play their penultimate match of the premier division campaign. All the best to the players.

Glasgow Schools’ Giant Heptathlon Champions!

A massive congratulations to our Giant Heptathletes who won the Glasgow Schools’ Championships 2020! The pupils worked incredibly hard to retain the title for the third year in a row in what was a very tough competition. No other school has retained the title so their achievement of three in a row is absolutely incredible, especially considering we are the smallest school in the whole competition! A huge thank you to the pupils for putting their full effort in to each event and being such great team mates to each other and fantastic ambassadors for the school! To top off the day the girls team retained the Relay Trophy for the 6th year in a row! Yes, 6! That’s as long as the competition has been running!

We also had a number or top three medal winners at the competition, and with over 100 boys and 100 girls involved that’s incredibly impressive:

Ewan Shot Putt Silver & 60m Silver
Ceitidh 60m Silver
Rhuna 600m Silver
Maisie Javelin Bronze
Isla 60m, Triple Jump and Shot Putt Gold & 60mH Silver

Scottish Schools’ Gymnastics Champions!!!

A phenomenal performance from our Gymnasts at the Scottish Schools’ Gymnastics Championships in Perth. After winning the level 3 competition at the Glasgow Schools’ Champs for the first time at only the second attempt, the girls went up against the best of the best from every local authority in Scotland and have came home to Glasgow with the Championship Trophy! Scottish Schools' Champions!!! The girls started the competition on the vault. You get two attempts each where the girls performed very well. It was however in the floor where the girls dominated the competition. With well thought out routines and excellent presentations the girls all finished inside the top 8 in the competition in the Floor. In fact once the floor and vault scores had been totalled up all four of the girls finished in the top 15 overall, that's absolutely amazing: Mirren Ward 6th, Isla Thoms 7th, Emilly Haldane 10th and Muireann Dalton 15th. That's outstanding from our pupils, Glasgow and Scottish Champions in the same year! A massive congratulations to you!

Glasgow Sports Awards

Here's some photos of SGG at the Glasgow Sports Person of the Year awards at the City Chambers. We received a trophy in recognition of the school receiving the Sportscotland Gold Award.

Glasgow Schools' Floor and Vault Gymnastics Championships

For the first time in the school's history we have won a Glasgow Schools' Gymnastics title! Our level 3 A team won the Level 3 competition which makes them the first team to do so in only our second year in the competition. The standard of this years event across all 3 levels was exceptionally high. SGG had four teams entered this year with one at level 1, one at level 2 and two at level 3. Our level one team of: Skye, Jenna, Lucie and Emma performed very well in both the floor and vault to secure bronze medals! Our level 2 team: Orla, Grace, Karis and Eilidh finished in 9th position and our level 3 B team finished in 5th. There were some great individual results too. Lucie in level 1 was 10th individual overall. In the level 3 individual event we had some great results: Emilly was 9th, Muireann 8th, Mirren 4th and Beth 3rd! Considering all these gymnasts only had 4 training sessions the results were very impressive. All the teams put in their best effort and have learnt a lot for next years' event. Congratulations to all our competitors.
