S3/4 Glasgow Schools Netball Tournament Champions

Congratulations to the S3/4 Netball Team for winning the Glasgow Schools Premier Division Netball Tournament. The girls put a fantastic display of netball together in the 4 group games. Each game was 20 minutes long and with only one sub the girls new it was going to be a tough day physically and mentally. Considering this is a brand new S3/4 team the girls played exceptionally well. Due to the quality of players in the team there was some positional changes with players playing new positions never experienced before. This was a challenge the team relished and worked out exceptionally well in all 4 games. This is the first time the school has won the S3/4 Netball tournament and it was the best quality of teams for some years with ourselves, Holyrood S3 team who were Scottish Gold cup semi finalists last year and Hyndland S3/4 team who have a number or club and district level players in their starting 7, this made for some very competitive games. SGG came out on top with a narrow win in the last game to take home the medals. Well done girls, what a fantastic achievement!

Scottish Cup Draw for Netball Teams

Congratulations to the S3 Netball Team for making in into the top competition of the Scottish Cup. The girls have been placed into the gold section of the cup with the best teams in the country. To get to this level is a fantastic achievement for the girls and the school. Our second ever senior team have played at a higher level than last year and this has resulted in them qualifying for the Silver Cup, last year they were in the Bronze. Our S1s are all new to netball and they start their journey in the sport. They had two tough apponents in the group with Holyrood and Balfron and lost both games so they have qualified for the Bronze cup. They are enthusiastic bunch and have progressed their performances every game so no doubt they will be entered into a silver or gold cup in years to come. Good luck to all our teams:

SGG S1s vs Holyrood (Edin) - Home Game
SGG S3s vs North Berwick High - Away Game
SGG Seniors vs Waid Academy - Away Game

Scottish Schools Silver Medalists!

What a fantastic result from Wednesday 3rd October 2018! Our Senior boys team came away with Silver medals at the Scottish Schools Road Race. This is the first medals for the school at this event and a massive achievement for our small school on the National stage. Andrew Carey was first home from the school having worked his way through the field on laps 2 and 3. Daniel Moran and Robaidh Whyte both put in incredible performances to finish in the top 40. Andrew, Daniel and Robaidh all packed very well and finished within 15 seconds of each other and were strongly backed up by David Comerford who finished in the top 55. David worked hard and increased his speed each lap to ensure the team medals were secured. Congratulations to our 4 athletes on their magnificent achievement.

S3 and Senior Netball Scottish Cup Teams

Good luck to the S3s who are playing their first game of the season on Tuesday against Notre Dame (Greenock). The S3s are looking forward to their first taste of the Scottish Cup as a team. Note Dame look like formidable opponents but the girls will give it their best shot. The seniors also play Notre Dame in their 2nd fixture of their regional league. Notre Dame got to the Gold Final last year and have put massive scores on the board against some great opponents: 93-31 vs Hyndland and 64-20 vs Shawlands. Make sure you’re well rested for Tuesday!

Senior Netball Team

It’s great to see we have a Senior Netball Team again this year. Last year we entered a senior team into the Scottish Cup for the first time with the squad getting to the Semi Finals of the Bronze Section of the Cup. We lost only one of the girls from last years team. This year the girls have been given an extremely tough group in the preliminary stages of the Cup. As well as our friends from Shawlands the school faces three Netball Super Schools: Hyndland, Notre Dame and St Andrews High School. This is a great opportunity for the girls to play against some of the best Netballers in the country. We start this years Scottish Cup journey away to St Andrews. Here’s the list of players selected for the game:

Annabel MacDonald
Seona Macleod
Eilidh Michie

Congratulations to the girls for being picked for the team, it’s been a difficult selection due to the number of enthusiastic and hard working players:

Scottish Schools Athletics Championships

Well this year proved to be our most successful year at the Scottish Schools Athletics Championships. On Day 1 - the relay championships we had two teams taking part, a girls 4 x 400m and a boys 4 x 400m. The girls qualified for the final and finished 5th after a great team performance, they are all young enough to take part in this event for the next 2-3 years which is promising. So well done Annaabel MacDonald, Chloe Forrest, Erin Moran and Eilidh McDougall.

The boys race went to a straight final. The team of Lewis Grimmer, Aidan Tittmar, Calum Stewart and Jacob Connelly went 3 full seconds faster than they did the year before. The boys put an almighty effort in to finish in 4th place. A big thank you to Lewis and Jacob who were taking part in their final school race and only a couple of hours before prom. Thanks for all your hard work for the school over the past 6 years, we appreciate it.

In the track and field championships which is a two day event we had a large number of athletes taking part, our biggest entry yet. Here's the team:

Day 1 – Friday 8th June
Annabel MacDonald – 300m
Eilidh McDougall – 100m
Shona Carey – 800m
Peggy-Nan Rodger – 800m
Sarah Bonad – 200m
Millie Soutar – Shot Putt
Iver Campbell  - 100m
James Diamond – 100m
Robaidh Whyte – 1500m
Joel MacInnes – 800m
MacKenzie Morrison – Discus
Cameron Weir – Discus

Day 2 – Saturday 9th June
Shona Carey – 1500m
Abbey Hart – 100m
Sarah Bonad – 100m
MacKenzie Morrison – 100m
Cameron Weir - Javelin

We had an unprecedented success over the two day event. Eilidh McDougall qualified for the semi finals of the 100m in the B girls competition. Iver Campbell, James, Robaidh McKenzie, Shona and Millie all recorded Personal bests all on day 1. McKenzie qualified for the final of the Discus and finished 5th! Cameron qualified for the final of the Javelin also a top 6 performance as too did Shona and Millie in the 800m and Shot Putt. The highlight of the championships for SGG was the performances in the final from Millie Soutar and Shona Carey. Millie won the bronze medal in the Shot Putt and Shona won a bronze medal in the 800m!!! This is the schools first ever medals at the Scottish Schools track and field and to get two on the one day was absolutely fantastic! Millie won the bronze by 7 cms, her series of throws was very similar to the girl in 5th so she did well to keep her composure and claim the medal. Shona qualified for the final with ease and in the final she ran a composed fast race to create a sizeable gap and hold off the chasing pack. Not only that she recorded a Personal Best in the process. Thanks to all the pupils for making this years championships unforgettable.

Glasgow Schools Athletics Championships

One of our biggest events every year is the Glasgow Schools Athletics Championships. This year we had over 60 competitors take part over the two day event, this really shows how strong athletics is in the school as to be entered into the championships your performances have to be of a high standard. To make finals at the championships you have to record a top 8 performance in your event which is no easy feat to achieve. This year we had more finalists than we have ever had! At the end of the two days we came away with a fantastic 11 medals, the most gold medals we've had at a championships, more finalists than every and 10 x 4th placed finishes. This year we also had more senior pupils competing that ever before which was pleasing to see, next year I will predict this number will go up again. Congratulations to all our athletes who represented the school so well. Looking forward to next year's competition already! Here are our medal winners:

McKenize S1 Boys Discus - Gold

Sarah Bonad S1 Girls 200m - Silver

S1 Netball Team - Glasgow Schools League Champions

Congratulations to the S1 girls Netball team who won the Glasgow Schools League 2018! What a fantastic achievement for the girls. The girls played Holyrood in the final a team who had beaten them in the league back at the start of the season. It was a home game so we played it at Kelvinhall. The team had the bare minimum for the game, 7 players and with a 40 minute game in warm conditions the girls new that it was going to be a tough day on the court. The game itself was very much stop-start with every ball contested for. It was the lowest scoring game that the girls had played since the meeting holyrood in the league. Sgoil Ghaidhlig Ghlaschu ended up winning the game 5-3. The girls done it! Glasgow Schools League Champions 2018! What an amazing achievement for the team and our wee school! Congratulations to the team who represented the school not only during the final but throughout the year:

S2 reach Semi Finals of Glasgow Schools League Playoffs

Congratulations to the ever improving S2 Netball team who played a great match against Holyrood Sec in the Semi-Finals of the Glasgow Schools Playoffs. Holyrood Won the fixture 34-28 but our girls should take great pride in the way they played against one of the best teams in Scotland. Holyrood got to the semi-finals of the Gold Section of the Scottish Cup beating last year’s winners in the process. During the game we started very slow which allowed Holyrood to create a sizeable lead however during each of the following quarters the girls got better and better. Abbey started running the show at centre and along with Leena. Ceitidh and Rhianna they were working very hard to win the ball back at any opportunity. Orlagh at GK was winning the rebounds particularly towards the end of the game. Kerry along with Millie Soutar are working incredibly well together as shooters and this was evident throughout the game. Throughout the season the girls have improved an enormous amount. The girls were up against the best S2 team that Glasgow has produced since I've been coaching. I have been very proud of our S2 team. Their effort, attitude and determination to better their performance as a team. Next year the girls have been entered into the Scottish Cup for the first time, they will need to raise their game even higher for that competition but we welcome the challenge.

Congratulations to the following pupils who have been selected to represent the school at the Glasgow Athletics Championships 2018. Like last year we are sending a massive team to the event. The Athletics championships along with the Glasgow Cross-Country are the two biggest events of the year in terms of numbers of SGG participants. We’re also sending the biggest S1 team to the event, this has been due to the effort and attitude that the pupils have been showing in class and at athletics. If you need a lift please contact the school by Thursday. The girls 4 x 400m team are into a straight final, the boys have heats and a final depending on the number of entries competing on the day. Pupils allowed to make their own way home after their race.

SGG Athletics Championships 2018

Thankfully we’re on to athletics now, phew! This year we are again going to record your performances in all athletics events throughout the block. However, new for 2018, we are running an Athletics Championships which will involve 5 events: 200m, 800m, Discus, Shot Putt and High Jump. The top 10 performances for S1-3 girls and boys in each event will be given points: 10 points for 1st, all the way down to 1 point for 10th. The top 3 pupils who have accumulated the most points in all 5 events in each year group will be awarded a prize at prize giving. Times, distances and heights can be recorded both in class and at athletics. Remember athletics will be on both Mondays and Wednesdays after school in preparation for the Glasgow Schools And Scottish Schools Athletics Championships. Good luck!

Glasgow Schools Netball Playoffs

Our S1 and S2 Netball Teams have made into the Glasgow League Playoffs. The playoffs this year are taking a semi final approach, the draw has been made and the fixtures are:

S1
Glasgow Gaelic vs Whitehill

S2
Holyrood vs Glasgow Gaelic

The draws couldn’t be tougher with SGG coming up against the two best school netball teams in each of the year groups. Holyrood got all the way to the Semi Finals of the S2 Scottish Cup Gold Section and Whitehill won the Glasgow Schools Netball Tournament and have an excellent team. We will be giving it our best shot, the girls know the challenge that lies ahead. Both our teams netball had been progressiving well throughout the year they will be going into the games with confidence and will be competitive in both games. As the girls know it’s much better to play opponents who are equal to or better than your own level  than to play oppornents of a lesser skill or experience level. We’re looking forward to the games, they take place within the first two weeks of coming back to school. Good luck to both our teams:

Scottish Schools Senior Netball

This year for the first time we’ve had a strong pool of senior Netball players from S4-6 so a team was entered into the Scottish Schools Cup for the first time at Senior Level. The girls qualified into the Bronze Cup and reached all the way to the Semi Finals! The girls played excellent netball throughout the rounds and were unlucky to lose out in the Semi Finals to the eventual winners James Gillespies. Our congratulations go to them for their victory. Having established a senior team this year it’s a very important step for the school and I hope that this will result in a senior team being entered into the competition each year from now on. We only lose one S6 pupil from the team for next year and we have a good group of S3s moving up to the Senior category next year. Congratulations to all the senior girls on a fantastic cup run:

Scottish Schools Cross Country Championships

The re-scheduled Scottish Schools Cross-Country Championships took place on March 17th at Hopetoun House Estate in South Queensferry. This was the Schools third year taking part in the championships. Last year we had two athletes (Peggy-Nan and Robaidh) break into the top 40 which was a massive achievement. This year the school raised the bar substanstionaly. Here’s a run down of all performances:

So what a difference a year makes. Last year two x top 40s, this year we had 5 including two top 20 finishes! Yet again fantastic running from talented pupils. The C Girls finishing 4th team in the country is amazing, well done to the girls. This eclipses our best team result from the B boys two years ago. More to come from SGG in years to come!

Glasgow Schools Giant Heptathlon Champions!

Sgoil Ghaidhlig have done it again, we’ve won the Glasgow Schools Giant Heptathlon Championships. This the schools second victory in this event in 3 years. This year the team had only pupils who had experienced the event last year, Abbey and Peggy-Nan. The rest of the team were new to competition, some didn’t realise they were doing it until 5pm the day before. On the day the whole team performed exceptionally well. There was a tremendous display of teamwork and sportman and sportswomanship. There were 14 schools form Glasgow taking part and this year the competition was very, very tough. 97 male and female athletes took part in each event. We had a number or top 20 finishes in the individual events and a handful of podium finishes too!

After each person had completed the 7 individual events there was the 6 x 100m Relays which runs as a sepearate event. This is a very exciting competition which involves heats then finals. With only 6 lanes there was only room for 6 schools in the final. Unlike last year both the girls and the boys qualified for the final. However there was mixed results in the finals. Unfortunately a finishing runner from another school cut up one of our athletes on leg 4 which resulted in our runner falling and having to get back up to hand the baton over. This ended our fight for the medals but what a strength of character to get up and get on with it. All following runners ran their fastest to the line to catch up with the pack despite this unfortunate incident. A cruel lesson learnt but I was very impressed with how the boys responded to the set back. After some not so great changeovers in the heats the girls went into the final with motivation to make things right! This year’s girls final had some very quick individuals and teams, SGG included. The changeovers were better in the final but going into the final leg we were sitting in 3rd place a second down on the top 2. A tall order for any athlete to come back from this in a 100m on a tight bend. Enter Sarah Bonad, our talented S1 pupil. Sarah took the baton from Peggy-Nan and used the first 50m to get on the shoulder of the top 2 Schools, she then went past them and won the race for SGG by a couple of strides. What a finish to top off a great team performance.

Most importantly on the day the 14 members of the team displayed enthusiasm, effort, teamwork and a lot of hard work. Regardless of any results this is our biggest success. I hope that they can continue this as we move into the summer athletics season.

A big congratulations to the team for becoming Glasgow Schools Champions!
