Christmas Cup Winners!!

Congratulations to our S3 Boys who won the Glasgow Schools Toryglen Christmas Cup. The boys won all their games throughout the day including narrowly beating the S2 boys 1-0 who got to the semi final and missed out on the final on penalties. In the final the boys had to work hard as a team after going down against Shawlands School of football. The boys remained composed and got back to 2-2 then 3-2 up all in the last stages of the game. Well done to Devyn, Calum, Lewis, Gilles and Calum MacA.

Medals at the Glasgow Schools Swimming Finals

Congratulations to Hannah Mason and Patrick Connor who both managed to qualify for the finals in both their events at the Glasgow Schools Swimming Finals. Hannah finished with the bronze medal in the 100m Breaststroke Final. She swam strongly throughout, managing to pull away from the 4th place finisher over the last 50m. Patrick picked up a Silver medal in the 100m Backstroke final he performed very close to his personal best. He was pleased to perform so well in the final and pick up a medal as well as record a good time. Amy Craig finished in 4th place in the final of the 100m butterfly open category, she's determined to come back next year to even better. Congratulations to all our finalists including Abigail Cavanagh and Kara MacDonald who had to miss the finals due to a clash with the outward bound trip. At the finals night it was great to see Abigail's trophy from last year and Sgoil Ghaidhlig Ghlaschu on a swimming trophy for the first time ever.

Scottish Schools' Road Race

Congratulations to the SGG team who went to the Scottish Schools Road Race in Falkirk and competed very well. The race attracted the best runners from around the country so this was a good opportunity for our athletes to see where they stand with the best of the best.

In the S1/2 Girls race Shona Carey ran well to finish in 62nd position. Peggy-Nan who was making her first appearance for the school athletics team performed well throughout the race to finish in 91st position. Top 100 was the target for the girls so they did well to finish strongly with over 180 taking part.

In the S3/4 boys race they packed very well: Andrew Carey finished in 68th position, Calum Brown 78th, Ruairidh Harris 82nd and Benjamin Campbell 87th. Credit must go to Ruairidh Harris who was making his first appearance for the school athletics team. Ruairidh has worked hard over the last 3 and a bit years to develop his fitness and is now a very strong runner. We look forward to seeing how much further he develops.

In the S5/6 girls race, Amy Craig who had just completed her first 10km race at the Great Scottish Run ran well to finish in 41st position. Amy still has another year at this age group.

In the S5/6 boys race, Daniel Moran was against the most competitive field of the day. Daniel who is in S4 but with his date of birth he just missed out on being able to run the S3/4 age category. Daniel ran a brilliant race to finish in 27th position. This was the performance of the day from the school. Daniel will have two more years at the age group and will no doubt be determined to get into the top 20.

Well done to all competitors!

Good luck to all swimmers for the finals night on the 31st including Amy Craig who goes in the open event. Unfortunately Kara and Abigail will miss this event due to a clash with Loch Eil. They'll both be back next year though.

S3/4 Team 4th in Glasgow Schs' Division 1 League

The S3/4 Netball team finished 4th in Division 1 of the Glasgow Schools Netball League. The S3/4 age group was split into two divisions based on the performance at the Glasgow Tournament back in October. Throughout their fixtures the S3/4 team played the best netball the school has produced. The team which is made up mostly of S3s now has good experience for the league next year. Here's a round up of how the players performed throughout the year:

Christy
Christy has improved her defensive skills at Goal Keeper this year. She reads the game well and her marking has been excellent. Her distribution from throw ins has improved a lot this year too.

Katrin
Despite only in her second year of playing netball Katrin is one of our most consistent netballers. She can play any position but is asked to play Goal Defence due to her good marking and timely interceptions. She can quickly turn defence into attack with some powerful long passes to the shooters.

Yvonne
Yvonne has played well this year at GK, GD and WD. Her rebounding and defensive positioning was been important to the team as well as her ability to play in any position.

Daisy
Daisy has been consist this year. She's been playing a relatively new position at Wing Defence. This has been due to her good defending and her movement to get free for the ball from centre passes and throw ins.

Sarah
Sarah has mainly played centre this year. Her high levels of stamina are key to us maintaining a fast paced game. She moves up and down the court well and her eagerness to get on the ball is key to keeping possession and getting the ball to the shooters.

Morag
Although Morag is one of SGG's best shooters she also is arguably the schools best wing attack. She was asked to play wing attack more often that not this year and she was excellent in each game. She again played the most minutes for the school for the second year in a row.

Lauren
Lauren played both centre and goal attack this year. Her shooting this year was key to us winning some close games against All Saints and St Thomas Aquinas. As the team captain she was excellent in motivating the team to play  their best.

Aimee
Aimee has again improved at shooting for the second year having played both Goal Attack and Goal Shooter. Her movement to get free from defenders is getting a lot better as too is her rebounding. Still in S3, I'm looking forward to seeing how she performs in S4.

Tamlin
Her movement inside the circle is very good. She uses clever footwork to get herself in the best shooting position and importantly for the team her rebounding under the stand is excellent.

With Lauren, Tammy, Christy and Yvonne all moving on to S5 the team will be completely different next year. Although the S2s haven't played in a league yet, they have a handful of players who have the potential to steal some places away from the S3s. Add that to the fact that we have 14 or so girls from S3 who play netball regularly at training each week, then next year will be the most competitive squad of players for the S3/4 age group that we've ever had. Keep practicing over the summer holidays.

Prize-giving 2015-16

A big congratulations and thank you to all the PE prize winners 2015-16. Excellence and Effort awards were given to both boys and girls classes for each PE year group. Also, sports prizes awarded by the coaches and players were handed out along with special merit awards for excellence, commitment and achievement:

Highlights of 2015/16

What a year of sport it has been at SGG. Undoubtably the best year of sporting performances the school has ever had. Here's some of the highlights:

Glasgow Schools Netball League Champions

The girls played the netball league playoff (top vs second) against Holyrood at the Emirates arena on Wednesday 1st June. The girls knew that this would be a tough game against the best netball school in Glasgow and one of the best in Scotland. Both teams would be looking to take home the title in this winner takes all match.

The game stayed with the better netball in the first half being played by Holyrood. They passed and moved the ball well with their goal attack playing exceptionally well. The third quarter SGG played their best netball of the game. Annabel and Abigail started to link up well together dominating possession. This provided with Seona a lot of opportunities. Although marked by a very good GK, Seona was able to find space and score 5 points in the third quarter...(she did say at half time she was going to do this). In the final quarter both teams gave all their effort to win the match. Holyrood were given lots of opportunities to get back into the game which they did which made the last 3 minutes very nervy for SGG. The final whistle sounded with the result being 19-16 to SGG. A great game by both teams.

Well done to the S1 girls who created history by becoming the first team from the school to win the Glasgow Schools Netball League. Played 9 games, won 9 games. The school has been playing netball for 3 years and this is only the second year the school has entered the league. Next year the school will be entering the Scottish Schools' Cup for the first time. With no facility to play home games the school will hopefully be able to use the Kelvin Hall for some of their games next year.

The following girls played for the school throughout the year:

Annabel
Alison
Abigail
Anna
Seona
Sileas
Iona
Eilidh
Evie
Mirren
Sophie
Niamh
Mia
Rachael
Shona

Scottish Schools Track and Field

The school entered the Scottish Schools Track and Field Championships for the first time. 6 athletes went: Shona and Annabel S1, Eilidh S2, Daniel S3, Lewis and Jacob S4. All athletes competed very well on the National stage and should be proud of their performances. Here's some action shots from the Saturday with Annabel in the long jump and Eilidh in the 100m.

Glasgow Schools Adventure Race

The school finished 3rd at this year's Glasgow Schools' Adventure Race. The school performed very well across most of the disciplines but were stuck for a long time on the team challenge which cost them the valuable minutes. Despite this, the boys tried their hardest throughout all the events to finish up as high as possible. The same team can still
compete for the next two years at this event which is great news. The mainly S3 girls team finished in the top 15 which was impressive as it was nearly 10 places higher than last year's all girls team. Well done to you all for your excellent performance.

Sports Day 2016

Sports Day went very well this year with lots of competitive athletic events and some fun mass participation relays too. All performances counted towards the overall inter house competition. Hiort for the 2nd year in a row won sports day with Ronaigh very close behind in 2nd place, Scarp were 3rd and Miughaigh in 4th.

Glasgow Schools Athletics Championships

The school had arguably it's most successful sporting day ever at the Glasgow Schools Athletics Championships. Last year we thought 4 medals was going to be the best the school could achieve for a long time but this year our athletes absolutely smashed that record taking home 10 medals!!!

Lewis Grimmer who had never competed at the Glasgow Schools Championships before but this year he was entered in two events this year and what a day it was as he took home two medals! His performance in the senior boys 800m (he's still in S4) was superb! He paced the race perfectly, coming off the bend in the home straight and changing gears to take the victory. He then had to quickly go to the high jump. He was of course fatigued after the 800m but still managed to jump 1m68 to take bronze.

Eilidh added her 2nd 100m medal to her collection by coming in 2nd place in the final of the S2 race. She ran very well, getting a better start in the final and made the Hutcheson girl work all the way to the line.

Daniel who finished 3rd last year in the 1500m was going into this race with a bit more confidence having won the Glasgow Schools XC Championships in February. Although not a club runner but a competitive footballer, Daniel shows a level head when in a race. His pacing, tactics and sheer determination shown in the 1500m final resulted in him crossing the line in 1st place. Congratulations to Daniel on what has been a fantastic year for him in athletics.

Erin Houston who's first ever hurdles race was in the heats at the Glasgow Schools Championships. She qualified comfortably and then ran even better in the final to take home the bronze medal. The PE department are delighted for Erin who has shown a fantastic attitude and put in a lot of effort in sport since returning to SGG.

Two years ago when Robyn was in S1 she failed to qualify for the Shot Putt final at the same championships. This year she took home the bronze medal! She decided to play it safe and do a standing throw which makes her bronze medal even more impressive.

Cailean who was making his outdoor track and field debut for the school took part in the Triple Jump. Having never jumped into a pit before Cailean only had 3 jumps to get it right. He managed to do this securing the bronze medal in his final jump.

Josh was the first on the track for SGG taking part in the very difficult 400m Hurdles. Even more difficult considering Josh had never done a 400m before or raced over hurdles over any distance. That didn't stop him from putting in a brilliant performance and taking home the Gold medal in the process.

Annabel who's in S1 is keen on athletics and showed at the Giant Heptathlon that she is a very good all round performer, sprints, endurance and jumps. She did both the 200m and Long Jump, medalling in the long jump with 4m25 and finishing 4th in the 200m final. Well done Annabel.

Similar to Daniel, Robaidh is a footballer but shows good potential at running and is very determined. Robaidh running his first ever 1500m found the race challenging but did very well to take home a bronze medal in the process. His time was very impressive, so impressive in fact that he would have medaled in the senior boys 1500m.

Other stand out performances included the S2 girls relay team finishing 4th in the final. Shona finishing 4th overall in the 800m time trials. Lewis C was 5th overall in the S2 800m. Andrew C S3 running a big pb in the 800m. Devyn 6th in the S2 boys Shot Putt. Erin Moran qualified for the S2 girls 200m final although injured. James Diamond was 6th in the boys Long Jump final. Very well done to all the athletics team for an outstanding performance.

International Netball Tournament at Disneyland Paris

So the school had its first ever Sports Tour this year! On the 30th March 20 pupils and 2 teachers traveled to Paris for the International Netball Tournament. We had two teams an U14 team and an U16 team enter the competition. The trip involved three days of netball in total with two of those days dedicated to tournament games and the other a coaching day from England Netball coaches. Along with the netball the girls got to go to Disneyland Paris, so all days of the trip were action packed! The netball the girls played was exceptional. They were sometimes up against teams who were more experienced but the girls certainly raised their game. Both teams were playing against older girls but this did not faze them. The S1/2 u14 team finished their tournament finishing in 2nd place. The S3/5 u16 team finished in 2nd place!! Both teams performed very well and showed great team spirit throughout. Here's a selection of photos from the trip. Thanks to Mdm Jebbari for accompanying the girls on the trip.

Scottish Schools Cross Country Championships

Due to the improvement of the pupils at SGG in cross country (and athletics in general) we have been entering athletes into scottish schools events this year for the first time. Two weeks after the Glasgow Schools' Championships 12 athletes from the school traveled down to Irvine to compete on the national stage. With a change of date in the fixture for this event from a Saturday to a Wednesday allowed more schools to enter which resulted in over 1600 pupils from across Scotland taking part on the day. Getting into the top 100 in a race would prove to be challenging enough as the fields for each race were packed.

Here's how our pupils got on:

D Girls
110th Shona Carey

D Boys
57th Robaidh Whyte
123rd Patrick Connor

C Boys
83rd Calum Stewart
91st Lewis Conley
103rd Findlay Dickson

B Girls
69th Amy Craig

B Boys
58th Daniel Moran
64th Jacob Connelly
84th Lewis Grimmer
99th Conall Whyte
110th Benjamin Campbell

The B boys team had an excellent performance on the day and finished 4th team! That's 4th best cross country team in Scotland. Well done to the boys and congratulations to all competitors from SGG.

Scottish Schools Indoor Athletics Championships

Erin Moran, Eilidh McDougall and Jacob Connelly all competed at the Scottish Schools Indoor Athletics Championships early February. This was the first team the school had ever sent to this event. Eilidh ran extremely well in both the 60m and 200m, her first ever races indoors. Not only did she qualify for the semi finals of the events at u16 level (she's only 13) she also recorded the 11th fastest time in Scotland for both events. Erin competed in the 300m and 200m. She performed very well, particularly in the 300m where she made the semi final and recorded the 14th fastest time in Scotland. Jacob who just missed out on the u16 age group was up against some experienced older athletes. Never to shy away from competition he performed exceptionally well to record 56 seconds for the 400m which was 3 second personal best! Jacob took some motivation from his performances and we're glad to hear he had joined his local athletics club. We look forward to seeing how Jacob and the girls get on in the summer season.

Glasgow Schools Netball Tournament

The increasingly popular Glasgow Netball Tournament has had to be split over two days due to the number of schools entering teams across the year groups. The S1&S2 tournament took place on a separate day from the S3/4s. This suited SGG as this allowed each school to play everyone else rather than it being split into leagues. More games the better! The schedule was action packed and SGG had 5 teams entered across the tournaments. The set up was two halves of 8 minutes and with having to play each team some teams ended up playing 4 games in a row.

The S1 A team who finished 2nd in October having lost out to the best netball school in Glasgow, Holyrood. The girls have been playing well in the league and knew that all teams would have improved over the months having played league games. The girls won 7 of their games and drew with Holyrood in a fantastic day for the girls. The team despite having equal points with Holyrood lost out on the number of points scored across all games. 2nd again but equals the best finish (their previous 2nd place) from the school in a Glasgow tournament. Expect to be practicing shooting when you get back from Easter holidays though. Well done to the team. Girl of the tournament was captain Annabel MacDonald, consistently played well in a variety of positions throughout the day.

For the first time in SGG history we had a 2nd S1 team enter the Glasgow Tournament. This team was relatively inexperienced but it was a great opportunity to learn by playing experienced teams. The girls lost all their games but performed well but put in a good effort in each game. Good to see Beth playing for the school for the first time this year. The girls got to play different positions and some of the girls should be looking to get into the A team next year. Girl of the tournament was Sophie Whelan.

The S2 Team who finished 3rd in October haven't had a lot of games since then so they expected to be pushed hard from teams who have been playing Scottish cup and Glasgow League games. They performed very well, particularly in the game against the excellent Jordanhill, showing great character to come back from 5-1 down at half time and narrowly losing at the end. The girls have definitely improved in their netball, this has been boosted by Jessica and Caitlin recently joining clubs. Next year the girls will be competing for places with the current S3s...looking forward to those battles. Girl of the tournament was captain Eilidh McDougall.

The S3/4 A team had a brilliant tournament finishing 3rd overall. The girls played some excellent netball and showed great team spirit to get a result particularly when the games were close. The girls easily put in the best netball display of an S3/4 team from the school at a tournament so a big well done to you all. 5 of the team are in S3 so they will be back for more of the same next year. Girl of the tournament was captain Lauren McDougall.

The S3/4 B tea also had a brilliant tournament finishing 5th, the highest our B team has ever achieved. The girls were boosted by the return of Robyn Paton to the team after 18 months out. Yvonne Conley was also drafted in from the A team due to the injury to Skye MacK. The girls worked well together and motivated each other when things got difficult i.e. In their 4 games in a row. Louise played well in her unfamiliar role of centre. Karen and Naimh's shooting has improved and the defence was solid. 6 of the girls are in S3 so they should be pushing to get into the A team next season. Girl of the tournament was Robyn Paton.

Glasgow Schools' Cross Country Championships

The school has been improving in its performance at this event since first entering 4 years ago. On that day we had 1 top 20 across all the race, last year we had 6 and this year we had an incredible 15 top 20 finishers. The school has been going from strength to strength in athletics and cross country, this event  was proof of our athletes performing to a higher level.

There was some stand out performances from the school. Robaidh Whyte finishing 7th and Patrick In 16th in the S1 Race. Shona Carey 12th and Beth Murray 21st in the S1 Girls race. In the S2s Calum Stewart improved his finishing place by a brilliant 14 places from last year to finish in 9th with Lewis Conley 12th, Findlay 15th and backed up by Alexander, Gilles and James the boys finished 4th team. In the S3 race and overall performance of the day came from Daniel Moran who won the race!!! Daniel showed great tactical awareness and determination to win the gold medal and the schools first ever medalist at this event. Daniel was 6 seconds down on the leader after the first lap but having worked his way through the field he got on to the shoulder of the Academy pupil and went straight past him and opened up a sizeable gap towards the finish. He was greeted by huge cheers from the SGG crowd going into the last 200m! Daniel was backed up with excellent runs from the other S3 boys, all finishing in the top 30! Benjamin proved again he is much fitter than last year by finishing 15th, last year he was in the 40s. Andrew Carey who was representing the school for the first time had a great debut in 18th position. Josh was 22nd and Callum Douglas 28th. Due to their exceptional team performance the boys finished 2nd team overall and the schools first ever team medals.

Amy Craig who had just seen Daniel win the S3 boys race went next and was running in a combined S4 and S5/6 race. Amy who has improved her endurance year on year was looking to go better than her 9th place in 2015. She certainly did that, Amy finished in 2nd position! Amy had started aggressively going with the pace, she settled down into the 2nd lap and had enough at the finish to hold off the challenge from two athletes. Two individual medals for SGG! Amy also went on to represent her running club the next day at the Scottish National championships, a tough weekend for her but well worth it! Sarah Robertson who competed in the same race as Amy and who was not long back from injury finished a credible 8th in the S5/6 race. Sarah will be looking to move further up the field next year once she returns to full training.

Not to be outdone by the S3 boys, the S4 boys had a point to prove in the team race. The boys had been so close to medals the last two years but were going into this race much fitter than before. Jacob Connelly in his first Glasgow Schools Cross Country ran fantastically well to finish 4th and narrowly behind 3rd position. I have no doubt that he will be even closer next year. Luc Galanti finished in 8th, Lewis Grimmer 9th and Conall Whyte 10th. This was a fantastic team performance and resulted in the boys like the S3s, coming away with silver medals!

What a memorable day for all participants and for the school. Two individual medals, two team medals, 15 top 20 placings and throughout the field nothing but effort and great performances. Well done to all pupils on your performance at these championships, you have set the bar even higher than before.

On to next year now.

Glasgow Gaelic School Cross Country Race

Due to a last minute change of plans the annual school cross country changed to a road race due to safety concerns. The new format this year was comprised of just two races, a girls race and a boys race. This meant we had S1s racing alongside older year groups, right up to S5! Both races were very competitive and the cross country training done in core PE this year ensured everybody was ready to complete the 2 mile course as best they could. In the girls race Amy Craig and Shona Carey had an almighty battle at the front of the pack. Annabel MacDonald did her best to stick with the pace for the first lap but Shona kept pushing it up the hill for the second time. Amy had to work real hard to keep up with Shona going down the hill, she then decided to go past Shona in the last 500m and kept a gap enough to win by a narrow margin with Shona 2nd and Annabel 3rd. Here are the results of the individual secondary races.

S1
1st Shona
2nd Annabel
3rd Beth

S2
1st Johanna
2nd Abigail
3rd Shannon

S3
1st Anna
2nd Louisa
3rd Niamh

S4
1st Amy
2nd Karen
3rd Ruadhan

In the boys race we had Daniel Moran who had won the school cross country races the previous year's up against Jacob Connelly, Lewis Dickson and a whole host of runners who had been going well in training. Daniel, Jacob, Lewis Dickson, Lewis Grimmer and Benjamin were all closely packed for the first 3/4 of a mile. Like the girls race, It was then down to a two horse race with Daniel and Jacob setting an electric pace round the challenging hilly course. Daniel again proved to be the fastest endurance athlete at the school by winning in a very impressive time of 12.11. Jacob was 2nd in 12.29 with Lewis Dickson 3rd in 12.41.

S1
1st Robaidh
2nd Patrick
3rd Jackie

S2
1st Calum S
2nd Lewis
3rd Findlay

S3
1st Daniel
2nd Benjamin
3rd Calum

S4
1st Jacob
2nd Lewis D
