Garscube Schools XC

16 pupils from Sgoil Ghaidhlig Ghlaschu took part in the Garscube Schools across Country on Saturday. This was a fantastic turnout from the school.

In the boy's S1-6 race Jacob Connelly won the race in 9.06 closely followed by Lewis Dickson in 9.11 and Lewis's younger brother Finlay 3rd in 9.25. Calum Brown was 6th, Lewis Grimmer 7th, Euan MacLean in 8th, Kahel Maybe in 9th, Callum Douglas 10th, Harry McGrory 13th and Gregor MacAaskill 14th.

In the girls S1-6 race Amy Craig was 3rd, Anna Murray was 7th, Charlotte Moock 8th, Erin Houston 9th, Abigail Cavanagh 10th and Sarah MacKay 12th.

Some excellent displays of running from all pupils. Well done to you all. The next race will be the SGG Cross Country early February with the next Garscube Harriers XC on February 21st.

Scottish Schools Road Race

For the first time the school entered at Scottish Schools Athletics event. Both myself, Mr MacCorquodale and Mr Mackay felt it was time for the pupils to experience a higher level of competition as the standard of athletics has got increasingly better over the last 3 years we've been in the school which is a credit to ththe pupils' hard work.

The school sent 12 pupils along to Helix Park in Falkirk. Conditions were windy but dry. The S1/2 girls went first in a race with 172 runners the start line seemed to go on forever. Shona Carey was first home for the school in 87th position which was a very good run. Annabel MacDonald had a difficult start but finished well in 115th with Abigail Cavanagh in 143rd. The girls team finished in 26th position, Seona and Annabel will be back next year in the same race.

The S1/2 boys were next after trying to warm up and having cheered on the girls. Lewis Conley had a fantastic run to finish in 45th position. Lewis who in is own words hasn't done much running recently but this performance yet again showed that he has a lot of potential in athletics having performed well in indoors, cross country, outdoors and road athletics over the last 10 months. S1 Robbie Whyte had a good run also finishing in 77th position with James Diamond in 101st the boys finished 19th team.

Amy Craig was our sole representative in the S3/4 girls race. She had two consistent laps and finished in 55th place. This was an impressive performance since Amy is just getting back into running after some injury issues.

The S3/4 boys had a strong team for the event. Daniel Moran had the performance of the day, finishing in 36th position. He still has another year at this age group. Daniel is another who has had an impressive display of running over a variety of events including his fantastic bronze medal in the 1500m at the Glasgow Schools Championships. Luc Galanti, Connal Whyte and Lewis Dickson packed very well to finish 60th, 61st and 62nd respectively. The boys team finished in 11th position. Well done boys!

Sarah Robertson re-injured her shoulder in the S5/6 girls race, we wish her a speedy recovery back to full fitness.

The behaviour and support for everyone from SGG was expemplarly, well done to you all. Here's to next year's competition.

Netball vs Hillhead

The S1s played a game of 5s netball vs Hillhead in their 2nd league match. The team started with:

GK Iona
GD Sophie
C Annabel
GA Alison
GS Seona
Sub Eilidh
Sub Abigial
Sub Evie

The girls were playing a strong physical Hillhead side who had some very tall players in their side. SGG player well in their 2nd game together. The ball was moved quickly and the girls limited Hillhead to a few chances in front of goal. The subs came on and provided fresh legs, all the girls played well with special mention to Evie in her first game for the school. Playing 5s was tough work but SGG ended up comfortably winning the game 18-1. Well done girls.

Girl of the Game: Seona

The S3/4 Team knew they would have a very tough game against Hillhead who's S3s had a great year last year, reaching the semi finals of the Scottish Shield.

GK Yvonne
GD Katrin
WD Daisy
C Sarah
WA Morag
GA Lauren
GS Aimee
Sub Christy

They weren't wrong, Hillhead displayed some excellent netball. They clearly had experience of playing with each other and this was shown in their movement at centre passes and around the goal circle. SGG who had mainly S3s playing should take pride in how they performed, they kept focused on marking the opposition closely and played some fantastic netball themselves. Lots to think about it for Mr MacCorquodale, some areas to work on in training but on to the next fixture now which is a friendly against Woodfarm on December 14th.

Netball vs Bannerman

The S3/4 team played the second league match against Bannerman last week. The team was strengthened by the return of Christy who missed the All Saints game. The girls lined up with:

GK Christy
GD Yvonne
WD Daisy
C Katrin
WA Morag
GA Lauren
GS Aimee
Sub Sarah
Sub Tamlin

This was possibly the best performance a team has put in from Sgoil Ghaidhlig Ghlaschu in a netball league match. The team moved the ball very quickly down the court and were quick to close down the opposition when they had possession. The effort levels were high and the subs were effectively used when players started getting fatigued. SGG won the game 19-5. Congratulations to the team.

Girl of the Game: Katrin

The S3/4 Team had a friendly game against the Bannerman B team. The line up was:

GK Margaret
GD Rebecca
WD Catriona
C Eilidh (S2)
WA Skye Mac
GA Karen
GS Niamh

The girls started slowly and were under pressure straight away from Bannerman who had a good C and GA but the defence played well limiting the Bannerman shooters to a limited number of shots. Niamh and Karen and later on Rebecca and Karen worked well in attack and got more confident as the game went on. The final score was 8-1 to SGG. The girls are keen to get another friendly. I can confirm that the next friendly will be on December 14th against Woodfarm High School.

Netball vs All Saints

Both the S1 and S3/4 Netball teams played their first league match against All Saints Secondary. The girls new that it would be a difficult night of netball as All Saints always have good teams right throughout the school.

The S1s played first. The starting team was:

GK Iona
GD Sophie
WD Anna
C Annabel
WA Abigail
GA Alison
GS Seona
Sub Eiliidh
Sub Rachael
Sub Mia

The girls played some fantastic netball throughout the game. Sophie who was playing GD for the first time, played very well. Annabel put in a great shift at centre and Alison and Seona combined well to score 15 points between them. Mia, Rachael and Eilidh all came on for the second half and played well. For Mia and Rachael this was their first ever competitive game so it was a whole new experience for them on a full sized court. The final score 17-7 to SGG. The girls should be pleased with how they performed. The focus should now be to develop fitness levels.

Girl of the Game: Alison

The S3/4 Team started with:

GK Yvonne
GD Katrin
WD Daisy
C Sarah
WA Morag
GA Lauren
GS Aimee
Sub Tamlin
Sub Margaret

The team which was playing together for the first time settled into the game quickly. Aimee and Lauren were making most of their chances. The girls had some difficulty with the very good All Saints Centre who was quick and moved well up and down the court connecting defence to attack, so concentration levels had to be high. Daisy played well to keep track of the WA who was always a threat on the attack. SGG had some very strong performances throughout the team. The new shooting combinations of Lauren & Aimee, Tammy & Aimee and Lauren & Tammy were fantastic. Lauren scored an impressive 10 points. Yvonne who normally plays shooter played well in her first game at Goal Keeper. It was a very close match with SGG winning 21-14 in the end. Well done girls!
