Glasgow Schools' Athletics Championships Results

Our 2019 athletics team have absolutely smashed it!!! Two years ago we had our record medal haul of 15 medals at the Glasgow Schools' Athletics Championships, this year....18!!! Last year we got 3 golds, this year an unbelievable 9!! Half of our medals were golds! The two day championships was a fantastic advert for our school, the pupils put tons of effort in and were so supportive of each other across the age groups. It was pleasing to see a bigger pool of senior athletes turn out for the school, some for the last time after competing every year in these championships and their efforts were awarded with lots of medals, season bests and some PBs too. Andrew Carey and Shona Carey finished with Silvers in both the 1500m and 800m respectively. Eilidh McDougall an ever present medal winner again finished with a medal finishing 3rd in the 100m her 5th at these championships. Annabel MacDonald added to her 3 previous medals by finishing 3rd in the 300m, Iver Campbell has been excellent at the Glasgow Schools' Championships and again won Gold this time as a first year senior in the 100m and... Grace Thompson won Gold in the Senior Girls Discus throw. However I can't not talk about the S1s, never before have we had so many medals at the S1 age group. Isla Thoms became our first ever DOUBLE GOLD medalists winning the 100m and the Shot Putt. Ewan Campbell having just seen his brother win the 100m, stormed to victory in the S1 100m final making it the first family gold pairing at SGG. Maisie Hinks won silver in the Javelin too and her points for her silver added to Isla's medals resulted in the SGG S1 girls team finishing 3rd in the medal table which is a first for the school to finish in the top 3. It was really pleasing to see others perform exceptionally well, McKenzie Morrison reclaiming the title of Discus Champion making it two in a row for him. Lucie Mills was rewarded for all her hard work finishing 2nd in the 800m which is amazing considering she never qualified for the final last year. Millie Soutar threw a PB to win gold in the Shot Putt. Sophie Pettifor winning gold in the Discus to win back the title she won in S1. Sarah Bonad won the 200m final this year in an exciting race with the top two well clear of the field. Peggy-Nan Rodger has been a consistently good performer for the school in many an endurance event but had never won an individual medal until securing bronze in the 1500m. Ceitidh MacDonald won Silver in Javelin and Cameron Weir bronze to add to his medal last year in the same event. To add to this record haul we had more finalists than ever before but most importantly we saw 100% effort from all our competitors. Thank you to all our athletes for making the championships such a memorable occasion.

S2 and S3/4 Glasgow Schools’ Netball Champions

I’m delighted to tell you that our S2 Team have won the Glasgow Schools Netball League, again! That makes it two in a row for our S2s. Our S2s won the playoff league final comfortably putting in their best display of netball all year to secure the Schools’ first ever title defence (winning the league in S1). Also, our S3/4 Team have won the Glasgow Schools’ Netball League, none other than the big prize, the Premier League Championship!!! Wow! This was our best ever S3/4 team and I’m delighted that they came away with the title up against some quality competition in the biggest and most competitive league in the S3/4 age group. Don’t forget that this makes the S3/4 team the first team from the school to do the Glasgow Schools’ tournament and league double this year! What a year it’s been!!! To top it all off our Senior Team got to a higher level of competition this year, the Silver Scottish Cup narrowly missing out on the quarter finals of the competition. And not forgetting our S1s who got to the playoff semi finals and the Scottish Cup Bronze Final and the S3 team who qualified for the Scottish Cup Gold section! Five teams this year and all 5 have done absolutely amazing! Congratulations and thank you to all 5 teams for a phenomenal year! It really has been brilliant, a season to remember! Two league trophies, a tournament Win, a tournament Silver, a Scottish Cup Final and a highest placed finish for the Senior Netball Team. I’m looking forward to next season already!

More photos and info on the players from all the teams at a later date!

Athletics Opportunities before Glasgow Schools' Athletics Championships

The Glasgow Schools' Athletics Championships is fast approaching. In preparation for this, I would like to invite pupils to take part in two events.

A first opportunity is an open-graded event in Livingston on Wednesday 22nd May. This involves a number of events for each age group where you can come and record times or distances against people of similar standards + ages. Here you can see the website for more information and the flyer which involves details about the age group cutoffs. Please note this age groups as some of the S1s will actually be in the u15 age group and not u13s.

The second event takes place at Crownpoint track just beside Glasgow Green. It offers fewer events than the Livingston competition but a great opportunity to record a PB none the less. Athletes can do a 100m, Shot Putt and/or a long jump.

For both events pupils should enter via online links themselves.

Any questions please don't hesitate to ask.

Paris International Netball Festival

For the third time in recent years, SGG sent a squad of Netballers to the International Netball tournament in Paris. This trip proves to be very popular with any pupils as it mixes netball with Disneyland. What's not to like! This year it was an S2/3 combined team who went down to compete in the u14 competition. This was the strongest team we have sent to the competition due to some birthdays falling after the cut-off. Mr MacCorquodale and Miss Burgess accompanied the girls down to Paris and after the week was done both were full of praise for the girls, their effort, behaviour and their attitudes were absolutely outstanding all week. We couldn't praise them enough. On top of that the girls not only qualified for the Gold section cup but also finished in 3rd place overall. The only game they lost on the whole trip was to the eventual winners, our friends from Australia! The netball the girls played was exceptional and they really raised their game at the tournament. As well as picking up a trophy for third the girls also received the spirit of the games umpire award which is a real testament for how sporting, well behaved, supportive and respectful our team were. This award is actually SGG's second at the games with our last trip also receiving the same trophy, the netballers are really putting SGG's name out there in such a positive way! Well done girls on being so fantastic all week, thank you!

Sirens Netball Festival

14 of our S2 girls participated in the Sirens Netball Programme. This programme is like a cross between PE and PSE and takes part over 6 weeks. At the end of the 6 weeks there's a netball festival involving all the schools running the programme in the North West of the city. It was great seeing our pupils fully engage in the programme and performing exceptionally well in the netball festival. There were some special awards for our girls at the end of the festival too. Sophie Hoy was awarded attacker of the day, Lucca MacAuley was awarded Defender of the day and the main award for Most Valuable Player went to Grace Boland who was presented this trophy by Claire Maxwell the Scotland and Sirens Netball team captains! Claire presented the award to Grace because of her improvement from the beginning of the programme to her performance in the finals...Grace was on fire in the festival scoring many goals for her team! Well done to all our players, I hope you enjoyed the programme and the festival and I also hope to see more of you attending netball on a Monday and or Friday if you can make it.

Scottish Schools XC

We have a small but mighty group of runners heading to the Scottish Schools XC at Hopetoun House Estste in Edinburgh tomorrow. We have a tea...
