Athletics Opportunities before Glasgow Schools' Athletics Championships

The Glasgow Schools' Athletics Championships is fast approaching. In preparation for this, I would like to invite pupils to take part in two events.

A first opportunity is an open-graded event in Livingston on Wednesday 22nd May. This involves a number of events for each age group where you can come and record times or distances against people of similar standards + ages. Here you can see the website for more information and the flyer which involves details about the age group cutoffs. Please note this age groups as some of the S1s will actually be in the u15 age group and not u13s.

The second event takes place at Crownpoint track just beside Glasgow Green. It offers fewer events than the Livingston competition but a great opportunity to record a PB none the less. Athletes can do a 100m, Shot Putt and/or a long jump.

For both events pupils should enter via online links themselves.

Any questions please don't hesitate to ask.

Paris International Netball Festival

For the third time in recent years, SGG sent a squad of Netballers to the International Netball tournament in Paris. This trip proves to be very popular with any pupils as it mixes netball with Disneyland. What's not to like! This year it was an S2/3 combined team who went down to compete in the u14 competition. This was the strongest team we have sent to the competition due to some birthdays falling after the cut-off. Mr MacCorquodale and Miss Burgess accompanied the girls down to Paris and after the week was done both were full of praise for the girls, their effort, behaviour and their attitudes were absolutely outstanding all week. We couldn't praise them enough. On top of that the girls not only qualified for the Gold section cup but also finished in 3rd place overall. The only game they lost on the whole trip was to the eventual winners, our friends from Australia! The netball the girls played was exceptional and they really raised their game at the tournament. As well as picking up a trophy for third the girls also received the spirit of the games umpire award which is a real testament for how sporting, well behaved, supportive and respectful our team were. This award is actually SGG's second at the games with our last trip also receiving the same trophy, the netballers are really putting SGG's name out there in such a positive way! Well done girls on being so fantastic all week, thank you!

Sirens Netball Festival

14 of our S2 girls participated in the Sirens Netball Programme. This programme is like a cross between PE and PSE and takes part over 6 weeks. At the end of the 6 weeks there's a netball festival involving all the schools running the programme in the North West of the city. It was great seeing our pupils fully engage in the programme and performing exceptionally well in the netball festival. There were some special awards for our girls at the end of the festival too. Sophie Hoy was awarded attacker of the day, Lucca MacAuley was awarded Defender of the day and the main award for Most Valuable Player went to Grace Boland who was presented this trophy by Claire Maxwell the Scotland and Sirens Netball team captains! Claire presented the award to Grace because of her improvement from the beginning of the programme to her performance in the finals...Grace was on fire in the festival scoring many goals for her team! Well done to all our players, I hope you enjoyed the programme and the festival and I also hope to see more of you attending netball on a Monday and or Friday if you can make it.

Netball Playoffs Confirmed

Our S1 and S2 Netball Teams have played exceptionally well this year and have progressed through to the Netball playoffs. The playoffs include the top two teams from each of the two leagues in Glasgow. The draw has been made and I can confirm that the S1s will face St Andrews Secondary at home and the S2s will face Hillhead. Both games will be tough as they both performed very well in their group games. The S2 game will be taking place tomorrow night, no rest for the team as they are just back from the International tournament in Paris. The team will however be understrength as starting player Rhuibn is unavailable for this game so we will need everyone to come ready to play their best. Good luck to both teams in their quest to reach the finals.

Our boys had a very competitive final and it came down to a very close finish, with 3 teams neck and neck in the final change over but it was All Saints who came through to take the victory and SGG 2nd! What a performance from the boys it what was the most competitive boys relay ever at this competition.

I have to say I was really impressed with all our competitors, a big thank you and congratulations to you all for making history! 2 in a row and a record points total!!!

Scottish Cup Final

Our first ever Scottish Cup finalists put up an almighty effort against Monifieth in what was an exciting final match. The first quarter started a bit slow with both teams playing some good netball but nerves were really on show with lots of turnovers and the shooters on both teams not seeing much of the ball. The quarter score was only 3-3. Both teams then settled into some good netball, Monifieth had four very strong, physical and skilful players which made it difficult for our team to play however SGG rose to the occasion and started to find kinks in their armour as the game progressed. At half time SGG were up by 1 goal and by third quarter Monifieth were up by 1, this shows you how close the game was throughout. The game could have gone either way but in the end it was Monifieth who pulled ahead by 4 goals with no reply in the last two minutes of play which meant SGG had no time to get back in the game, well done to Monifieth who had a great team and deserved the victory 23-19. Our S1 team should be very proud of how they have played not only in the final but in all the knouckout games too. There is so much stacked against the school: smallest school in competition (190 girls in the school S1-6), no home court just an assembly hall to play on, most of the team had no prior experience of playing netball until secondary so the fact the girls have been able to quickly get up to this standard of play is absolutely amazing. I really don’t think the team and all our netball teams we have/had understand how impressive it is to be able to compete at local and national league level considering everything above. The S1 Monifieth team had district level players in their team going by a tweet made by Angus Netball. That’s incredible, that’s the same district level age group as our S3s are in. Only two of our players go to clubs and one of those only recently, this shows you hoe good the work all our Netballers our in at training week in week out. You could tell their girls had more experience with the game but our S1 girls pushed them all the way. Maisie and Layla both played well at GK and have shown on the court that they have learnt a lot this year. Isla was outstanding both at GD and C, she won the ball back for us numerous times resulting in more opportunities for our shooters. Emilly played another consistent game for us at WD, she very, very rarely loses the ball for us which is important in the mid court. Seona but in an almighty shift, she coped very well moving from C to GD after half time despite having never played GD before, ever. Isobel made some excellent passes to our shooters in the circle, her movement has improved dramatically this year and although she probably prefers to play GS we appreciate the excellent effort she puts in for us at WA. Orla our GA was up against the tallest player on the court but nothing is knew there, it always seems to be the GD as the apposition’s tallest player. Orla has been very impressive this year and in the final again worked very well with both Seona, Isobel and Rhuna. She’s played so well at GA that she has made that her own position in the last 4 games when others could possibly play there. Rhuna at GS played her best game ever for SGG she really was fantastic. Her timing and movement was the best it’s ever been, she should be proud at her performance as the opposition found it very challenging to find a way of stopping her playing. Well done girls, what a performance and what a cup run! It really was amazing, thank you all so much for your effort this year in the Scottish Cup. The whole school is proud of you for your Silver team National medals!

Netball Tournament

Congratulations to the S2 Netball Team who won all their games at the NW Schools’ Netball tournament m. This fun and friendly tournament allowed the girls some extra practice before their up and coming trip to Paris for an International Netball Festival. Well done girls.

S1 Netball Team makes Scottish Cup Final

A big congratulations to the S1 Netball Team for being the first team from the school to make a Scottish Cup Final. We are all delighted for you! To make the final the girls had 3 tough games against Holyrood (Edinburgh), St Andrews from Paisley and in the Semi Finals Dumfries Academy. The game against St Andrews in the quarter final was particularly close with just two goals in it. The girls had a great first half but St Andrews made it a real battle in the 2nd and we just managed to scrape it in the end. The team now play Monifieth in the final on Thursday 21st March. Good luck girls:

Glasgow Schools’ Cross-Country Championships

Wow, what a day we had at the Glasgow Schools’ Cross-Country Championships. In fact it was our most successful day of sport in the history of the School! A big congratulations to all our magnificent pupils for putting such a tremendous effort in. Here’s a round up of all the races...

S1 Girls
The day kicked off with a great quality S1 girls race. Emilly Haldane ran a storming race to finish 10th overall. Isla Thoms wasn't too far behind in 17th, they were backed up well by Orla MacAskill 31 and Iris O'Connell in 32nd. Seona Brown ran well to finish in 42nd, all girls inside the top 50 is a first for SGG at S1 level! These girls will medal in the team event if they keep up their hard work over the years. A fantastic start to their cross-country experience at SGG.

S1 Boys
What an absolutely brilliant performance from the boys. Finlay Robb finished in the highest position an S1 boy has placed for SGG, in 5th! He was backed up tremendously by Calum Murray 18th, Sandy Arthur 19th, Gabriel Murphy 22nd Oliver Campbell 35th and Jonathon Dow 38th. This sterling performance secured team silver medals for the boys. This is the first time our S1 boys have medalled at these Championships.

S2 Girls
The 5 S2 girls put in a really strong performance in the race. Lucie ran a great race and had a great finish, sitting in 14th with about 400m to go she came through strongly to finish 9th. Olive anhilated her finishing position from last year to finish 21st this year. As too did Maebh and Sara in 27th and 31st respectivley. Eala ran well in her first ever cross-country race to finish 61st. The girls finished 4th team!

S3 Girls
The S3 girls medalled last year and made in two years in a row finishing with the Bronze team medals. Peggy-Nan ran another solid race to finish 6th. Kerry has been performing exceptionally well in class went out and had a stormer to finish 13th. Cerys had a great run to finish 19th as too did Abbey 24th and Sophie Pettifor 28th! All girls in the top 30 is incredible at this level.

The S3 boys were so close to a team medal, finishing 4th! Rico ran a great race to come home 10th, Fionn Graham 13th, Connor Walker 28th, Flynn Butler 36th and Robert Kay-Whyte 59th. Lets bring back the Gold next year guys.

S4 Girls
Shona Carey ran an exceptional race to become the Glasgow Gaelic Schools' first ever girls winner of a Glasgow Schools' Cross-Country Championship race. She was backed up excellently by Abigail in 8th, Mirren 13th, Annabel 16th and Niamh 18th. This secured the silver team medals for the girls. A big well done.

S4 Boys
Robaidh, Duncan, Sean and Lewis won Team gold! Their brilliant effort means this is the third year in a row that Sgoil Ghalidhlig Ghlaschu have won this team trophy! The boys were excellent! Robaidh finished an excellent 4th, Duncan 8th, Sean 12th and Lewis 14th! All 4 inside the top 15 is a brilliant performance.

Senior Boys
Andrew Carey is Glasgow Schools' Cross-Country Champion 2019! This is actually the first race Andrew has ever won, what a time to do it! Daniel Moran again got on the podium with another phenomenal performance for the school. That's four podiums in the last four years for Daniel. David Comerford was 23rd and Alexander Buchan 26th. The boys won team bronze to go with the team golds they won last year and silver & bronzes in previous years too.

I would just like to thank all the pupils who represented the school. You were all excetional! Thank you so much for all your effort in running your best for yourself, team mates and the school. Your attitude, behaviour and performances were all amazing. Moran Taing Mr MacCorquodale.
