SGG Athletics Championships 2018

Thankfully we’re on to athletics now, phew! This year we are again going to record your performances in all athletics events throughout the block. However, new for 2018, we are running an Athletics Championships which will involve 5 events: 200m, 800m, Discus, Shot Putt and High Jump. The top 10 performances for S1-3 girls and boys in each event will be given points: 10 points for 1st, all the way down to 1 point for 10th. The top 3 pupils who have accumulated the most points in all 5 events in each year group will be awarded a prize at prize giving. Times, distances and heights can be recorded both in class and at athletics. Remember athletics will be on both Mondays and Wednesdays after school in preparation for the Glasgow Schools And Scottish Schools Athletics Championships. Good luck!

Glasgow Schools Netball Playoffs

Our S1 and S2 Netball Teams have made into the Glasgow League Playoffs. The playoffs this year are taking a semi final approach, the draw has been made and the fixtures are:

S1

The draws couldn’t be tougher with SGG coming up against the two best school netball teams in each of the year groups. Holyrood got all the way to the Semi Finals of the S2 Scottish Cup Gold Section and Whitehill won the Glasgow Schools Netball Tournament and have an excellent team. We will be giving it our best shot, the girls know the challenge that lies ahead. Both our teams netball had been progressiving well throughout the year they will be going into the games with confidence and will be competitive in both games. As the girls know it’s much better to play opponents who are equal to or better than your own level  than to play oppornents of a lesser skill or experience level. We’re looking forward to the games, they take place within the first two weeks of coming back to school. Good luck to both our teams:

Scottish Schools Senior Netball

This year for the first time we’ve had a strong pool of senior Netball players from S4-6 so a team was entered into the Scottish Schools Cup for the first time at Senior Level. The girls qualified into the Bronze Cup and reached all the way to the Semi Finals! The girls played excellent netball throughout the rounds and were unlucky to lose out in the Semi Finals to the eventual winners James Gillespies. Our congratulations go to them for their victory. Having established a senior team this year it’s a very important step for the school and I hope that this will result in a senior team being entered into the competition each year from now on. We only lose one S6 pupil from the team for next year and we have a good group of S3s moving up to the Senior category next year. Congratulations to all the senior girls on a fantastic cup run:

Scottish Schools Cross Country Championships

The re-scheduled Scottish Schools Cross-Country Championships took place on March 17th at Hopetoun House Estate in South Queensferry. This was the Schools third year taking part in the championships. Last year we had two athletes (Peggy-Nan and Robaidh) break into the top 40 which was a massive achievement. This year the school raised the bar substanstionaly. So what a difference a year makes. Last year two x top 40s, this year we had 5 including two top 20 finishes! Yet again fantastic running from talented pupils. The C Girls finishing 4th team in the country is amazing, well done to the girls. This eclipses our best team result from the B boys two years ago. More to come from SGG in years to come!

Glasgow Schools Giant Heptathlon Champions!



Sgoil Ghaidhlig have done it again, we’ve won the Glasgow Schools Giant Heptathlon Championships. This the schools second victory in this event in 3 years. This year the team had only pupils who had experienced the event last year, Abbey and Peggy-Nan. The rest of the team were new to competition, some didn’t realise they were doing it until 5pm the day before. On the day the whole team performed exceptionally well. There was a tremendous display of teamwork and sportman and sportswomanship. There were 14 schools form Glasgow taking part and this year the competition was very, very tough. 97 male and female athletes took part in each event. We had a number or top 20 finishes in the individual events and a handful of podium finishes too!

After each person had completed the 7 individual events there was the 6 x 100m Relays which runs as a sepearate event. This is a very exciting competition which involves heats then finals. With only 6 lanes there was only room for 6 schools in the final. Unlike last year both the girls and the boys qualified for the final. However there was mixed results in the finals. Unfortunately a finishing runner from another school cut up one of our athletes on leg 4 which resulted in our runner falling and having to get back up to hand the baton over. This ended our fight for the medals but what a strength of character to get up and get on with it. All following runners ran their fastest to the line to catch up with the pack despite this unfortunate incident. A cruel lesson learnt but I was very impressed with how the boys responded to the set back. After some not so great changeovers in the heats the girls went into the final with motivation to make things right! This year’s girls final had some very quick individuals and teams, SGG included. The changeovers were better in the final but going into the final leg we were sitting in 3rd place a second down on the top 2. A tall order for any athlete to come back from this in a 100m on a tight bend. Enter Sarah Bonad, our talented S1 pupil. Sarah took the baton from Peggy-Nan and used the first 50m to get on the shoulder of the top 2 Schools, she then went past them and won the race for SGG by a couple of strides. What a finish to top off a great team performance.

Most importantly on the day the 14 members of the team displayed enthusiasm, effort, teamwork and a lot of hard work. Regardless of any results this is our biggest success. I hope that they can continue this as we move into the summer athletics season.

Athletics Fixture List

For any pupils who have an interest in athletics I recommend that you use the next couple of months to try and improve your performances through both training and competition. Once all the netball fixtures have been completed over the next two weeks athletics will run after school on a Monday and Wednesday as well as the Friday morning. Training is open to all pupils S1-6 of any ability. If you would like to run, jump or throw then come along! Here’s recommendations of athletics competitions leading up to the Glasgow and Scottish Schools Championships at the beginning of June. Pupils should enter themselves and make their own way and back to and from the events. If you are not registered with a club then you put unattached under club name:

Scottish Schools Netball Cup QF

The Senior Netball Team are into the Quarter Final of the Scottish Schools Bronze Cup. The game was due to take place last week but because of the snow day the game has been rescheduled to Thursday 8th March. It’s a home game so this will be at the KH. Good luck to the following team:

Athlete Focussed Visit

After School on Friday 9th March (tbc Monday) a company called Athlete Focussed will visit the school to deliver a free taster session to a group of our athletes.

Athlete Focused is a sports performance company that delivers holistic athletic development to individuals across a number of different sporting disciplines.

 

Concentrated on creating world-class sportsmen and women and developing a performance culture, Athlete Focused centres its attention on four key pillars for success: training, nutrition, psychology and physiotherapy


The company will come in and do some testing to identify individual areas of strength and areas for development. Mr MacCorquodale has selected the following pupils to take part in this taster session:

Glasgow Schools Netball Tournament

One of the Netballers favourite days of the year took place last Tuesday at Bellahouston Sports Centre. Glasgow Schools Netball Festival involved S1 teams taking part in the morning session then S2 teams in the afternoon. The S1s played a league style tournament with the team at the top crowned champions. With more teams in the S2 competition they were split into two leagues initially then there were semi finals and a final to decide the winner. 

S1s

The S1 team have been making good progress in Netball since the start of the year. The girls are awaiting confirmation on other teams league fixture but they are likely to be in the final 4 playoffs for the Glasgow Schools  Title. Well done girls! Anyway, back to the tournament. In the league competition set up SGG had to play every team. Games were short and sharp, 10 minutes. The girls started a wee bit sleepy but improved with every game. They played some great Netball and worked very well as a team. The girls played 5 games, won 4 and drew 1. This resulted in the girls coming second, only to loose out on goal difference. Whitehill won the tournament, well done to them. They just scored a few more goals than SGG and this was the team that SGG drew with in the first game. The girls should be proud of their performances during the competition. A couple of games were close but they worked hard in defence and in attack to make the most of possession and get the ball to the shooters. The girls recieved some nice comments from the umpires who were in charge of the games, after watching their games they said the girls played some great Netball. One umpire was very impressed with Lucie’s performances and said she was close to getting player of the tournament. Olive received the ‘intercept of the day’ award from the organisers for her performances at Goal Defence. Congratulations Olive, you deserved it! Overall second in their first tournament is a really great result for the S1 team, keep up the hard work girls!

S2s
The S2 team have been working extremely hard this year. Their experience at the Inrernational Festival in Paris in October where they came third School in the competition proved to be a massive step forwards for their standard of play. Since then the girls have been playing even better. The S2 tournament on paper to me looked like the best tournament at the S2 level in the 5 years since Netball has been going at SGG. Teams such as Holyrood who have just beaten the current Scottish Champions in the Gold Section of the Scottish Cup. Hyndland who have a number of their team playing for Broomhill A Club team. Other teams such as Shawlands and Bannerman to name a couple have some excellent players in them, players playing at club district level which is a very high standard. It was good to have such great teams together for a tournament. 

As stated before the tournament was initially split into two leagues then the top two teams from each of those league progressed to the semi finals then finals. The second years arrived to Bellahouston just in time to see the S1s collect their silver medals, they shared their congratulations and this gave them even more motivation to begin their own competition. 

The team started with three wins in the league and won their group stage. They played well together in the initial games and progressed to the semi finals against the team who finished 2nd position in the other league, Hyndland. The girls had lost to Hyndland in their first league fixture of the year back in October so they knew the massive challenge ahead. During the game the girls played some fantastic netball and at the end of the 10 minutes they had won 14-5. This meant that they progressed to the final against Holyrood 1. The Holyrood 1 is undoubtably one of the best teams in the country so the girls went in to the final knowing that they needed their best to be competitive. They certainly brought their best to the court, the game was much closer than when they had met over a year ago in the S1 League. Holyrood ended up winning 11-7 and deserved their victory. This meant SGG came home with the silver medals and they should be extremely proud of their performance throughout the day, a fantastic display of team work. The Glasgow District Wildcats coach told the girls at the end of the day that they should all go for district trials in August, what a compliment to receive! The whole team played well from Orlagh at GK all the way through to Millie at GS they worked extremely hard for each other. Before receiving their silver medals the organisers gave out some additional awards. Millie Soutar won the ‘shot of the day’ award for her performance at Goal Shooter. She was excellent in each of our games. Additionally, Abbey won the main award ‘Player of the Tournament’ what a fantastic achievement! She was outstanding all day, congratulations!

Glasgow Schools’ Cross-Country Championships

Tuesday 20th February 2018 will be a day which will never be forgotten. The annual Glasgow Schools’ Cross-Country Championships took place at Netherpollok, Pollok Park. The school had a record number of entries for the event which is amazing considering we were missing a number of runners due to illness and injury. The event is a massive date on the sporting calendar. Only the Glasgow Schools Cross Country and the Glasgow Athletics do we have such a large number of our pupils out of school. Here’s how the races unfolded:

S1 Girls


Lucie, Olive, Maebh and Sara kicked off the days events. After seeing the course the girls nerves settled down considerably. There was mud but there was no big hills to contend with. Lucie has shown good promise at cross-country despite being in her words “a sprinter”. Her top 15 (14th) finish at the event should give her a lot of confidence to go on and place even higher up in future races, this is the third best performance we’ve had from an S1 girl in the history of SGG. All girls came inside the top 50 with Olive 47th, Maebh 48th and Sara 49th all packing well together.

S1 Boys


The S1 boys have been flying in training. They’ve been working hard and impressively there were 10 entries for the race due to the quality of their efforts in school. David was an impressive 15th in the race. Equally impressive were: Adam H 27th, Isaac 36th,Jed 37th, Joel 40th, Calum B 44th, Cameron W 53rd, Daniel 56th, Anndra 68th and Sam 83rd. Look out for these guys in the future, if the keep up this rate of hard work and effort then they’ll get their just rewards.

S2 Girls


Similar to the S1 Boys this year the S2 girls have really been impressive in everything they’ve been doing in PE and sport at SGG. Their enthusiasm, effort and dedication to improving their performances in sport has been admirable to say the least. The girls had a full team out for the race and were in high spirits after going better in training this year. Peggy-Nan was first over the line in 8th, Abbey 33rd, Cerys 38th, Ameilia 39th, Kerry 47th, Millie A in her first experience of Cross-Country 57th and Sophie P 68th. The girls packed amazingly well and were rewarded with the bronze team medals! Congratulations to all the team.

S2 Boys


The boys were a couple of men down for the event coupled with Fionn having a horrendous cold. This didn’t stop the boys from putting in a great performance. Fionn despite the cold came home in a very impressive 20th position, he was backed up by Rico (first XC) 28th, Connor 30th, Seumas 66th and Flynn (first XC) 68th. The boys will be pushing for a team medal next year if they keep progressing at the rate they have over the last year but they will also need Robert, Aaron and Odhran all fit and healthy. 

S3 Girls


One of the most impressive individual and team performances of the day came from the S3 Girls. Shona Carey who was 12th in S1, 6th last year went on put her best performance to date finishing with the Bronze medal. She ran with such confidence and kept up a frantic pace with the girl from Hutcheson who finished in Silver, it was an amazing to watch. The rest of the girls in the team also put in their best performances to date with: Beth 15th, Chloe 21st, Niamh (first XC) 31st, Abigail 37th, Mirren 40th and Kristen 50th. The girls were rewarded team silver, absolutely deserved after a brilliant team performance. 

S3 Boys


The boys team this year was a mixture of those who’ve done cross-Country before and those that are new to the event. The team was with out Robaidh who was a bronze medalist last year but this didn’t deter this year’s team at all. Duncan again put in a great performance finishing in 11th, Patrick 19th, Kyle (first XC) 29th, Sean 38th, Lewis (first XC) 39th, Luke 49th and Jack(first XC) 51st. There have been massive improvements made by the S3 Boys this year and I’m looking forward to seeing them fighting for team medals next year. 

Senior Girls

Amy Craig was competing in her last Glasgow Schools Cross Country. Amy has been an excellent performer at these Championships for the school over the years. We wish her all the best for her future endeavours. On the day she put another great performance finshing in 8th position in a high quality field. Iona was 41st and Abigail 42nd. 

S4 Boys


Well the last race of the day which involved 4.5km of cross country running was very entertaining. As with previous years the S4 Boys ran together with the Senior S5/6s but were running their own competitive race. The S4 Boys were motivated to do well in this year’s event after ‘missing’ last year’s event. This proved good fuel for the fire as the boys went out and absolutely dominated the team competition and took home the Gold medals and the Team Trophy. This meant that SGG retained the team title that the senior boys won last year, two in a row! Aidan Tittmar who has been working very hard in training over the last couple of years ran the race of his life to finish in 2nd position. This is his second indiviual medal at Glasgow Schools Championships after picking up Bronze in the 400m last summer too. He was backed up by Alasdair Campbell who was competing in his first ever competitive cross country race. He worked his way through the field to finish with the Bronze medal!!! What an absolute brilliant result, we are delighted for you Alasdair. Alexander also worked his was through, and finished with a top 10 placing, his first ever in his 4 years at the event. What a time to do it, he finished 9th. Findlay Dickson was 10th, he’d been off the day before the race and has missed a lot of training due to illness so we appreciate him lining up for the school. Gilles was 15th, his best performance at the championships, he’s a lot fitter this year due to his hard work in school and with his football team. Calum S was 19th and Cameron was 22nd. Cameron was competing in his first ever Cross-Country event. Congratulations to all the team! 

Senior Boys


This year was the first time we’ve had a senior boys team compete at these Championships. We hope this will be the first of many. Daniel who has been the most successful performer for SGG at Cross-Country knew he would  be in a harder race this year. With the event 4 days before the Scottish National Championships all fields had more club level runners in them. None more so that the Senior Boys. Daniel again put an excellent display of endurance, confidence and race tactics together to finish with the Bronze medal. Over the 3 laps he increased his speed to chip away at the field. At the bridge on the last lap he still had a lot to do to catch the runner in 3rd position. Daniel timed this to perfection and over took him in the last stages of the race. His third individual medal in 3 years. David put an awesome race together to finish in 5th, Andrew C 7th, Benjamin 16th, Calum 22nd and Ruairidh 27th ensured the team title came back with us to SGG! Congratulations to the team their third team medals in a row and second Team Gold winning performance! 



It was a landmark day for Sgoil Ghaidhlig Ghlaschu. The smallest school in the city came away with 4 individual and 4 sets of team medals. This is such and amazing achievement from our pupils. It is all down to their own hard work, great attitude and high levels of effort. Keep it up!
