Scottish Cup Football

Congratulations to the u16 football team who won the Schools first ever Scottish Cup football game. Although only the second year the school has entered the competition it's still a huge achievement for the school. The boys beat Campbletown in a close game 2-0 at Firhill. Scorers were Josh Hart and Kyle Gilles. The team will now play either Trinity High School from Rutherglen or All Saints Secondary in the next round. 

S3 Scottish Cup Netball Match

The S3 Team has been entered into the Scottish Schools' Netball Cup. They gained experience of the competition last year and are looking forward to playing again this year. The team has two very good teams in their regional league: Holyrood and Woodfarm. The first game for the girls is a next week, away to Woodfarm. With the S2s just entered into the Glasgow league and not the Scottish Cup then they can be considered for the team. Sgoil Gàidhlig Ghlaschu v The High School of Glasgow

SGG took on the financial muscle of the private schools in a double header against St Aloysius followed by The Glasgow High School. The first game ended in a 4-1 defeat with Lewis MacLeod getting the goal in a sub standard performance. Roll on 24 hours and SGG put played with skill, heart, desire and some superb individual performances in a 2-1 defeat. SGG were by far the better team, dominating the game in large spells but could not get a break in front of goal. The High School started  the better team, linking up ever so well and moving the ball around the pitch. SGG worked very hard to weather the storm and play themselves back into the game. Captain Daniel Moran led by example, exerting his calm on the team whilst stopping attacks in their tracks and retaining possession. Devyn Hope was his usual uncompromising self,ably supported by the full backs, Callum Douglas and Logan Morrison.  Cameron Simpson in goals, dealt with any corners and did everything asked of him.  Benjamin Campbell was creating space for himself in midfield and the High School had no answer at times for his turns and sleight of foot, leaving defenders in his wake. 

Suddenly, Josh Soutar had a rare bit of space in the box and his shot was turned round the post by the keeper at full stretch. Andrew Carey up front worked tirelessly and had a header cleared off the line. Josh Hart was played in and his attempted chip was the right option but failed to get enough lift on his shot.
The 2nd half started well for the High School, with a shot from their right midfielder thundering in off the underside of the crossbar. The HS had a decent spell and Cameron Simpson pulled off a few good saves. However, from there on in, SGG dominated the rest of the half. A lovely drag back from Benji resulted in a shot from 20 yards flashing wide.  Andrew Carey lobbed the keeper but the ball agonisingly bounced off the post. Logan Morrison (who played superbly) started a 4 man move involving Calum Stewart and Josh which led to Benji having another pop at goal but again it went wide. Lewis MacLeod was coming more into the game and tried to play Josh Souter in but he was well marshalled by the HS defenders. SGG had plenty of corners which almost resulted in goals from the head of Callum Douglas but he failed to find the target. Mr Smith was wondering if the goal would ever come but when it did it was worth waiting for. Benji strolled forward and with everyone expecting a pass out wide to Calum Stewart, Benji played a superb disguised pass to Lewis MacLeod who made a great run into the heart of the defence. Christopher Glasgow and Lachlann Brady came on with 15 minutes to go suddenly, we had a clear cut chance and Lewis had the composure to seize it, rolling the ball under the onrushing keeper! A goal richly deserved by the team. With 5 minutes to go, I'm sure both teams would have settled for a draw but HS snatched the win when they were awarded a penalty for a tackle in the box. SGG protested but it was the correct decision, the defender made contact with the player first and then the ball. I've seen them not given but that's football. Cameron almost saved the well struck penalty but not to be. SGG pushed for the equaliser but there was not enough time. 
Mr Smith was thoroughly impressed with the performance, everyone worked their socks off and played some good football in long spells. Some composure was lacking at times and decision making is something that comes with experience. We are all looking forward to the forthcoming Cup games and some more friendlies. Bring them on!

Scottish Schools' Road Race

For the third year in succession SGG have entered the Scottish Schools' Road Race. The race takes place around Falkirk Stadium with the races normally very fast on a flat course. 6 members of the team return to the event after competing the last couple of years however the vast majority are competing at the Scottish Schools level for the first time. The girls are working hard and now seven girls have been selected to play against Smithycroft in a friendly game before the league kicks off. Senior Netball Team Selection

This year for the first time SGG have a senior Netball team. The girls have been entered into the Open Scottish Cup. This is the first time any of the girls have played at the National level. There is a group stage to begin with, with our opponents being Bishopbriggs and Hyndland. Bishopbriggs and Hyndland did very well in the competition last year with Hyndland winning the Scottish Cup! Great experience for our new team to play against quality teams. The senior girls are taken from S4-6, here's the line up for next week's game against Bishopbriggs:

Here's a round up of this year's Glasgow Schools' Netball League Winning Squad. Well done to each and every player who participated for the school team this year. We have entered the Scottish Cup next year, the first time we have entered a senior team, so keep up the good work.

Great defensive position and understands her role in preventing the movement and success of opposition attack. An excellent motivator and team mate.

Willingness to play any position, great team player. A brilliant close range shooter who rebounds the ball well.

Pinpoint passes, great movement and determined to get on the ball.

Great mid to long range shooter. Accurate passer and good positional sense.

Learnt a lot this year playing with the older girls. Defense has dramatically improved. Accurate long range shooter.

2016/17 Sporting Highlights

Here's our 2016/17 Sporting achievements video. What a year it has been! We now have football, netball and athletics teams competing at Scottish Schools level. We achieved success at National level with the S1/2 Netball Team having a great run in the Scottish Cup, reaching the semi finals and our 4 x 400m girls relay Team won the Scottish Schools Title with a record breaking performance! Our Netball, athletics and football teams all won a variety of Glasgow Schools titles this year. The successes are all thanks to our wonderful, hardworking and determined pupils, thank you for your tremendous effort this year. Have a good well earned summer!
