Toryglen Girls Christmas Cup

Well done to the three girls teams who competed at the Toryglen Girls Christmas Cup.

The girls are playing football to a higher standard and this was shown in the tournament with all teams scoring more goals and recording more wins than last year.

Well done to Mr MacKay and the girls, keep up the good work!

S1 Netball vs John Paul Academy

The S1 girls had their first experience of playing a full game of 7s Netball in a 36 minute game vs John Paul Academy on Tuesday December 16th.

The team had a few late call offs due to various commitments. This resulted in a very last minute call up for Louise Templeton S2 who thankfully was able to play despite only being asked 15 minutes before departure. Louise was playing football at the Toryglen Xmas cup that day too so we appreciate her helping out the S1s who were a player short.

The team lined up with: Captain Jessica GK, Erin Mo GD, Adanna WD, Shannon C, Louise WA, Caitlin GA, Abigail GS and Iona Sub.

The girls were up against a mix team of S1-3 pupils from John Paul Academy. The game throughout was tight with both teams taking some time to familiarise themselves with rules and positional responsibilities. The game was very competitive and it was decided by only one point with the game finishing John Paul 5-6 Glasgow Gaelic.

Adanna who was playing her very first game of netball played very well at Wing Defence. Erin Moran at Goal Defence and Shannan Craw at Centre showed no signs of fatigue despite also being at Toryglen for football that day. Jessica was strong at Goal Keeper and made sure she competed for every ball. Louise playing in an unfamiliar position of wing attack linked well with Caitlin and Abigail. Abigail finished as top goal scorer with 3 points thanks to good work alongside Caitlin at GA. Iona came on at Goal Shooter and got into good shooting positions. Well done girls on a good performance against strong opposition.

Mr MacCorquodale would like to encourage all the S1s to attend training on a Tuesday or Thursday after the new year. There are two friendlies coming up in January against experienced opponents so it will be important to attend training in the lead up to these games.

Higher PE

The Higher PE class enjoyed a trip to the Scotstoun badminton academy today for a double period of PE.

The group of 10 boys have been working hard for the last 5 weeks to improve their badminton performance. Keep up the good work!

Toryglen Boys Christmas Cup

4 Teams from the Gaelic school competed in the Toryglen Christmas cup today. The games are 4 a side with no goalies! Congratulations to Gaelic School C who finished 3rd in the S3/4 league!

Well done to: Kashel, Morgan, Connal, Benjamin, Daniel, Adam and Lewis! Third out of 11 teams is a great result from the boys.

S2 Netball vs Bannerman

Well done to the S2 Netball Team who played against Bannerman High School on Tuesday 9/12/14. The girls travelled to the game without Sarah MacKay and Robyn Paton who also missed the game against Hillhead but welcomed the return of Daisy. Eight players made the journey to Bannerman and with only one sub the girls new it was going to be a physically demanding game against more experienced opponents.

Six of the eight girls had their first experience of Netball at the Glasgow tournament in March 2014. Since then more of the S2s have started playing the game this year and the team have had some new additions to the team like Niamh Robertson who was playing in only her second game against Bannerman and Katrin Swan who has only been playing since October. Great to see enthusiasm for the sport amongst the S2s.

The girls started the game slowly and were clearly playing with nerves. Bannerman were the far superior team in the first and second quarter, making most of their chances resulting in the half time score 7-5 to Bannerman.

After half time the girls started playing much better, there was a complete re-structure of line up apart from Morag who stayed Goal Attack. In the second half the girls were playing with more confidence and started making better pass choices and their defending had improved. Aimee changed roles from GD to GS which ultimately changed the game for Glasgow Gaelic. Aimee and Morag started playing well together and were linking up well with Katrin (C) and Daisy (WA) creating a lot of chances in the thrid and fourth quarter. Niamh (WD), Catriona (GD) and Margaret (GK) were fully focussed on competing for every ball but had a difficult task with the Bannerman team who were excellent on the attack. The girls in the final quarter of the game played great and doubled their points score from the previous 3 quarters with the final score being Bannerman 10-16 Glasgow Gaelic. Well done girls.

The girls and Mr MacCorquodale would like to wish Sarah and Robyn a speedy recovery back to full fitness and look forward to having them back in the team sometime soon.

Well done to the three s1 netball teams who competed against Jordanhill at netball. The majority of the girls had their first experience of the game. 9 girls will now go on to play against John Paul Academy next week for a game of full court 7s. Good luck girls.

Netball Leaders Course

Four pupils from the secondary completed their Netball leaders course run by Glasgow Netball. The course took place at the Glasgow Gaelic School along with pupils from secondary's across the city. Mia Paton, Mairi MacDonald, Eilidh Miller and Frances Driscoll completed the course. All four girls completed their level 1 sports leadership award last year and are part of the netball team so we hope to have them taking netball training for younger pupils soon. Well done girls.

Presentation from Kerry MacPhee

On Friday 24/10 the school was lucky enough to have Commonwealth Games representative and multiple Island Games medal winner Kerry MacPhee to the school as part of the Champions in Schools scheme.

The Young Ambassadors opened up the proceedings with a presentation about their role within the school and how they are going to attract more people into clubs and to participate in physical activity.

Kerry then took to the stage. She talked about her journey from playing school sport to representing Scotland at the commonwealth games. She had very clear messages for the pupils:

(1) Participate in a variety of sports at school! She talked about her participation in basketball and cross country that established a dedicated, hard working nature which later opened the door to further opportunities later on in life.

(2) Work hard in whatever you do (every subject) as persistence pays off. Kerry said maths, english etc were not her idea of fun but she had to work hard in these subjects to get into University.

(3) Success is not immediate it can take a long time, this was highlighted throughout the presentation. Kerry had to work extremely hard throughout her 20s to get to the elite level she is now at. This was illustrated particularly after her decision to focus on mountain biking at the commonwealth games which meant she meant she had to dedicate practically all her time to seek qualification, which included regularly traveling to Europe. To qualify, Kerry had to travel multiple times to compete on the European circuits (as well as british races) to seek the right level of competition. But her hard work and gutsy attitude paid off and she got her place in the team! This was despite the many hours travelling, transporting and building bikes before races, no support teams, bike failures, falls etc etc...But it was all worth while in the end when Kerry was awarded her place in the Scotland team for Glasgow 2014!

Her story is extremely inspirational for both staff and pupils. And for Kerry her successes started when she attended a school similar to the Gaelic School (Sgoil Lionacleit) and simply took part in the sporting opportunities that were provided at the school. Taking part in regular physical activity at school/weekends meant that when she left school she was in a physically active routine which motivated her to further develop and seek new sporting challenges at University. Kerry did this and has applied herself 110% to every opportunity she has been given. She is now one of the top ranked British female Mountain Bikers and finished a magnificant 14th at Glasgow 2014! A fantastic achievement to someone new to the sport.

We would like to thank Kerry very much for such an enthusiastic, informative and inspiring presentation. Moran Taing Kerry!

Abigail Swims to Success!

A massive congratulations to Abigail Cavanagh S1 who won two medals at the recent Glasgow Schools' Swimming Championships. The Glasgow Schools is one of the most competitive sports evnets on the calender so even getting to the final is a difficult task. Abigail qualified for both the 50m Freestyle and the 50m Breaststroke events. In the 50m Breaststroke, Abigail swam very well to finish in the silver medal position. In the 50m Freestyle Abigail swam strongly to take home the gold medal! She was in second place until the turn when she came up level with the leader. In the final 20m she powered through the water to take the victory and the first ever gold medal for the Gaelic School at the Glasgow Schools Swimming Championships! Well done Abigail!

Glasgow Netball Tournament

On Friday 10th October 32 girls from the secondary travelled to the Emirates Arena to take part in the Glasgow Netball tournament. This was the largest number of teams the school had ever sent to the tournament with 4 teams taking part. The netball club on a Tuesday and Thursday have had a consistently high number of pupils attending. Competition for places in teams has been fierce which has improved the overall standard of netball at training. All girls selected for the teams have earned their place. This school is gaining more experience in the sport each year, we are also delighted to see more girls taking up the sport outside of school and joining local teams.

S1 Netball Team
8 girls from S1 took part in the event. This was the first time they had played together in a game of 7s and on a full sized court. The girls played some fantastic netball and played very well as a team.

S1 Results:
Gaelic School 8 - 2 Bannerman
Gaelic School 3 - 0 Holyrood
Gaelic School 0 - 3 St Thomas Aquinas
Gaelic School 3 - 3 Whitehill
Gaelic School 4 - 0 St Andrews
Gaelic School 3 - 1 Rosshall

The S1s performed remarkably well and finished the tournament in 3rd place! A brilliant achievement for the team. The girls are already looking forward to entering the Glasgow league next year.

S2 Team
8 girls from S2 took part in the tournament. All the girls had played a game against Bellahouston the previous week but were strengthened by the return of Robyn who had been missing for 6 weeks due to injury. The S2s league proved to be very competitive with each point having a significant impact on the league result.

S2 Results:
Glasgow Gaelic 2 - 2 Bannerman
Glasgow Gaelic 1 - 1 Holyrood
Glasgow Gaelic 4 - 0 St Thomas Aquinas
Glasgow Gaelic 3 - 0 Whitehill
Glasgow Gaelic 2 - 5 St Andrews
Glasgow Gaelic 5 - 2 Rosshall

The S2s played some exceptional attacking moves in their games. The defence was solid and managed to keep very good teams to a limited number of chances. The team also got a couple of positive comments from other schools on their play. The S2 Team also finished in 3rd position also, well done girls!

S3/4 Teams
For the first time the school had entered two teams in the S3/4 Age Group. To highlight the popularity of the sport at S4 you just need to look at the statistics...10 out of the 20 girls in the S4 year group were represented in the netball squad. The girls have been working hard to improve their performance, this was shown on Friday as they are now playing at a higher level in competitive games.

S3/4 1 Results:
Glasgow Gaelic 6 - 2 Bannerman
Glasgow Gaelic 1 - 0 St Thomas Aquinas
Glasgow Gaelic 2 - 8 St Andrews
Glasgow Gaelic 1 - 5 Rosshall
Glasgow Gaelic 1 - 6 Holyrood 2

S3/4 2 Results
Glasgow Gaelic 2 - 1 John Paul's
Glasgow Gaelic 0 - 8 Holyrood 1
Glasgow Gaelic 0 - 5 Rosshall
Glasgow Gaelic 1 - 2 Jordanhill

This is the best the S3/4s have ever done in a Glasgow Netball Tournament. Team 1 finished in 7th and Team 2 in 9th. The girls hadn't played together in these teams before and were coming up against experienced teams who have probably played alongside each other for a number of years. However this is vital experience as the girls will now take part in the Glasgow League and will be playing competitive games monthly.

Well done to all girls who played. You all competed to the best of your ability and your behaviour throughout the day was a credit to your team and school!

Junior Great Scottish Run

On Saturday October 4th 20 pupils from the Glasgow Gaelic School met at George Square to take part in the Junior Great Scottish Run. The race is run round the streets of the merchant city and city centre. The popular race has two separate age categories (primary and secondary), the school had runners from both the Bun Sgoil and Ard Sgoil take part in both. Here are some of the runners before the race.

The race itself was started by former Olympic, World and multiple record holder Haile Gebreselassie! All athletes from SGG finished the 2.5KM race. The top finishers from SGG (all in the top 50!!!) were: Robbie Whyte and Karys MacKay from the Bun Sgoil and Connal Whyte and Sarah MacKay from the Ard Sgoil.

After the race the pupils met Ross Murdoch, gold medalist swimmer from the Commonwealth Games. Ross signed autographs and the pupils got some photos with him.

The School was pleased to see such a large number of pupils take part in this fantastic event. This was in addition to the primary 5 pupils taking part in a separate event the previous day Friday 3rd Oct.

As well as running the Junior Great Scottish run some of the secondary pupils managed to raise over £200 pounds for the PE department which will help with entries, travel, equipment and facility hire. The PE staff would like to thank all pupils for their contributions to the PE department.

Bellahouston 8 - 20 Glasgow Gaelic

Bellahouston 8 - 20 Glasgow Gaelic

The S2 Girls Netball Team played their opening Glasgow Schools' League match on Wednesday 1st October at Bellahouston Academy. The team had many familiar faces  from last years S1 team that played at the Glasgow Schools' Tournament in March and won the Glasgow Youth games in April. New faces in the team were Katrin and Iona who were playing their first ever competitive games of Netball with Eilidh only her second.  Full squad:

Margaret
Louise
Aimee
Morag
Daisy
Catriona
Sarah
Katrin
Eilidh
Iona

The girls started the first quarter well and quickly scored the first point of the game. However, Bellahouston immediately replied with the equaliser which alerted SGG that it was going to be a close game. Katrin Swan at Goal Defence had a difficult task of marking the opposition GA who had good movement but Katrin performed her defending duties very well against a more experienced player. Daisy MaGuire playing centre had a speedy opponent to mark but Daisy quickly settled into the game connecting defence to attack with some good passing. Louise Templeton who started at Goal Shooter had a number of impressive successful shots from the edge of the goal circle which resulted in SGG going up 7-3 at the end of the first quarter. All 3 subs came on for the second quarter with Sarah MacKay, Iona McCulloch and Eilidh Campbell having to quickly get settled into the game as Bellahouston looked to get back level. Morag (GS) and Aimee (GA) worked well together in attack getting the ball close to the stand for an easier shot. At the half time SGG were up 11-5.

The third quarter saw both teams getting a bit fatigued. However it was SGG's ability to adapt the team, utilising the substitutes who were able to extend the lead over Bellahouston. In the final quarter SGG did very well to score most of their opportunities, with Aimee and Louise playing successfully together as Goal Attack and Goal Shooter despite being matched against a good Bellahouston defence. Sarah Mackay shrugged off an injury to come back on at centre allowing Daisy to play at Wing Attack, the two combined well keeping the ball in the Bellahouston half. Catriona Macleod and Margaret Driscoll played a strong game in defence particularly in the final quarter with Bellahouston only scoring one point. The new members of the team did great; Eilidh Campbell and Iona McCulloch showed good determination and Katrin Swan who played both Goal Defence and Centre during the game showed good promise in both roles. The team worked hard throughout the match and it finished: Bellahouston 8 - Glasgow Gaelic 20.
